Essential Purpose: The Assistant In Training will work closely with the Golf Course Superintendent, Assistant Superintendent, Irrigation Team, Gardening Team, and other department leaders to support the daily maintenance and presentation of the golf course and surrounding resort property. A primary responsibility of the position will be providing resort landscape and irrigation support, while developing the technical knowledge, leadership skills, and operational experience necessary for advancement within the golf course maintenance organization.
Essential Duties:
Resort Landscape and Irrigation Support
- Provide daily support to the resort landscape team in maintaining the appearance, health, and presentation of landscaped areas throughout the resort property.
- Assist with the installation, maintenance, troubleshooting, and repair of landscape irrigation systems.
- Assist irrigation technicians with identifying and repairing broken, damaged, or malfunctioning irrigation components.
- Monitor irrigation systems for leaks, broken heads, clogged nozzles, improper coverage, and other system deficiencies.
- Assist with irrigation scheduling and adjustments based on weather conditions, plant requirements, seasonal needs, and water conservation objectives.
- Support the maintenance and organization of irrigation equipment, tools, parts, and inventory.
- Assist with hand-watering and supplemental irrigation as needed.
- Help monitor landscape plant health and identify areas requiring additional attention.
- Assist with pruning, trimming, planting, fertilization, weed control, mulching, and general landscape maintenance activities.
- Maintain a clean, safe, and professional appearance throughout resort landscape areas.
- Communicate irrigation or landscape issues to the appropriate supervisor and assist with timely resolution.
- Support water conservation initiatives and help identify opportunities to improve irrigation efficiency.
- To purchase supplies and services, and schedule all maintenance procedures, as directed.
Golf Course Maintenance
- Assist the Superintendent and Assistant Superintendent with daily golf course maintenance activities.
- Perform a variety of routine golf course maintenance duties, including mowing, edging, blowing, raking, bunker maintenance, trimming, detail work, and general course preparation.
- Operate golf course maintenance equipment safely and efficiently.
- Assist with course setup and preparation for daily play, tournaments, and special events.
- Assist with turf establishment, renovation, aerification, topdressing, overseeding, fertilization, and other agronomic practices.
- Support pest management, weed control, and plant health initiatives under the direction of department leadership.
- Assist with storm preparation, cleanup, and recovery activities.
- Maintain assigned tools, equipment, and work areas in a clean and organized condition.
Leadership & Professional Development
- Participate in a structured training program designed to develop technical and leadership competencies.
- Learn and demonstrate proper maintenance standards, operating procedures, safety practices, and departmental expectations.
- Develop an understanding of golf course agronomy, irrigation systems, turf management, landscape maintenance, equipment operations, and resource management.
- Assist with coordinating daily assignments and work activities as directed by department leadership.
- Develop communication and team leadership skills through interaction with maintenance personnel and other resort departments.
- Demonstrate the ability to work independently while also functioning effectively as part of a team.
- Participate in training opportunities, educational programs, workshops, and industry events when available.
- Seek opportunities to expand knowledge and skills related to golf course and landscape maintenance.
- Work toward progressively greater responsibility based on demonstrated performance, technical knowledge, reliability, and leadership ability.
General
- Respond to guest concerns in a timely and professional manner when directed.
- To promote & comply with all policies and procedures of Temecula Creek Inn.
- To immediately report all suspicious occurrences, hazardous conditions, spills, or safety concerns.
- To maintain the cleanliness and safety of work areas at all times.
- To practice safe work habits at all times to avoid injury to self and others, including compliance with company and departmental safety rules and regulations, and the proper use and handling of all relevant equipment.
- To attend all mandatory meetings, as directed.
- To perform other tasks, including cross-training, as directed.
Requirements
Knowledge + Education: Must have a minimum two years experience in golf course maintenance. English fluency required. Spanish fluency helpful. Must have thorough knowledge of turf varieties and their use and maintenance, and generally accepted cultural practices. Should be familiar with safe application and compatibility of pesticides, and have working knowledge of fertilizers and soil chemistry. Must be able to identify common turf diseases, insects, and weeds. California Qualified Applicator’s license required. Some knowledge of golf helpful. Familiar with OSHA, SB198, local Department of Health regulations, and relevant current laws governing handling of hazardous substances. Valid California driver’s license required. Proof of personal automobile insurance coverage required.

Physical Demands: Stand/walks approximately 80% of shift. Sits at desk or in meetings approximately 30% of shift. Occasionally required to handle and move objects weighing up to 80 lbs. over short distances. Bends, stoops, reaches, and lifts to perform routine job tasks. Flexibility and good reflexes required to operate power-driven machinery. Must be able to withstand prolonged exposure to sun. Must be flexible to work long, sometimes irregular hours. Moderate use of stairs, daily.
