Maintenance Specialist II

The principal function of this class is to perform physical tasks associated with the maintenance, irrigation, and beautification of the city’s parks and related areas. This position may supervise seasonal temp workers  This job class is distinguished from the parks maintenance specialist I position by the independence of work assigned. The work is performed under the supervision of the parks superintendent. The principal duties of this position are performed in an outdoor environment which may involve adverse weather conditions and related hazards.

• Performs work to plant, water, fertilize, cultivate, mow, and rake grass.
• Trims fence lines and the banks of drainage ditches.
• Collects litter and debris.
• Empties park garbage cans and hauls the collected waste to the city dump.
• Applies pesticides or maintains other chemical program operations.
• Uses hand tools such as picks, shovels, and rakes.
• Operates power equipment, including chain saws, edgers, weed eaters, push and riding mowers, back hoes and field painters.
• Inventories Parks and Recreation areas and informs supervisor of needed repairs and maintenance.
• Cleans and weeds flower beds, mulches around flowers, and waters.
• Prunes flowers and related shrubbery.
• Cleans and paints pools, tables, and related Parks and Recreation facilities.
• Repairs windows, doors, plumbing, and other fixtures.
• Performs manual tasks in the installation of water lines, irrigation systems, fencing, tee boxes, flag poles, benches and picnic tables.
• Monitors and maintains equipment in a safe operating condition and reports all damages to supervisor.
• Checks and maintains air, oil, fuel, spark plugs, mower blades, tires etc.
• Cleans equipment and work area.
• Sets up city holiday lights displays.
• Provides information and demonstrates how to perform certain work tasks to new employees in the same or similar class of positions.
• Consistently keeps supervisor and relevant team members informed about work progress, current and potential issues, and proactively suggests new or improved solutions to address challenges.
• Attends approved meetings, conferences, workshops, training sessions, and remains current on the principles, practices, and developments in assigned work areas.
• Responds to questions and comments in a courteous and timely manner.
• Communicates and coordinates regularly with others to maximize the effectiveness and efficiency of interdepartmental operations and activities.
• May supervise seasonal temporary workers.
• Performs other related duties as assigned.

Education, Training, and/or Experience Required:

• At least three years of work experience involving landscaping, mowing, operating sprinkler systems and outdoor maintenance.

Licenses, Certifications and Other Requirements:

• 18 years of age
• Possession of a current and valid driver’s license
• Successful completion of pre-employment background check, physical, and drug test (including prescription medication).
