Yard Supervisor

Position Summary: The Yard Supervisor oversees the daily operations of the logistics yard, directing the safe and efficient movement, staging, and tracking of trailers, containers, and equipment. This role supervises yard staff, coordinates with warehouse, dispatch, and transportation teams, and enforces safety and regulatory compliance to keep inbound and outbound freight flowing on schedule. The position exists to keep yard operations organized, productive, and compliant, minimizing delays and supporting on-time delivery across the facility. 

Key Duties and Responsibilities: 

• Supervise and coordinate daily yard operations, including the movement, staging, and organization of trailers, containers, and equipment. 
• Lead, schedule, train, and evaluate yard staff (yard jockeys/spotters and gate attendants), assigning tasks and monitoring productivity. 
• Oversee accurate check-in and check-out of inbound and outbound trailers and maintain real-time yard inventory and location tracking. 
• Enforce safety protocols and ensure compliance with Cal/OSHA, OSHA, and DOT regulations, including safety briefings and equipment inspections. 
• Coordinate with warehouse, transportation, and dispatch teams to prioritize loads and meet delivery and shipping schedules. 
• Monitor and maintain yard equipment (yard trucks/hostlers, forklifts, pallet jacks), scheduling preventive maintenance and reporting defects. 
• Maintain logs, records, and reports on yard activity, productivity, gate transactions, and safety incidents. 
• Identify and resolve operational issues, delays, and yard congestion, escalating to management as needed. 

Requirements

Required Qualifications: 

• High school diploma or equivalent. 
• Minimum of three (3) years of experience in yard, warehouse, or logistics operations, including at least one (1) year in a lead or supervisory capacity. 
• Valid California driver's license with a satisfactory driving record. 
• Ability to safely operate yard equipment (yard trucks/hostlers, forklifts, pallet jacks), or ability to obtain required certification upon hire. 
• Working knowledge of Cal/OSHA, OSHA, and DOT safety and compliance requirements. 
• Strong leadership, organizational, and communication skills, with the ability to manage a team in a fast-paced, high-volume environment. 
• Basic proficiency with computers and warehouse/yard management systems. 

Preferred Skills and Experience: 

• Forklift and/or yard truck (hostler) certification. 
• Bilingual (English/Spanish). 
• Experience with yard management (YMS) or warehouse management (WMS) software. 
• Prior experience in a high-volume distribution, 3PL, or freight operation. 
• Familiarity with lean or continuous-improvement practices in warehouse and yard operations.
