Responsible for the analysis of laboratory specimens and subsequent result reporting according to laboratory protocol and procedures.


Job Description

Essential Functions

  • Performs accurate and appropriate testing of specimens received in the laboratory, according to established laboratory protocols and procedures.
  • Reports test results in a timely manner and according to established laboratory protocol and procedures.
  • Follows established procedures for laboratory quality control and reports discrepancies to the appropriate supervisor.
  • Performs daily, weekly, monthly, or as needed, maintenance on instruments and equipment as appropriate.  Performs calibration of equipment as required.
  • Troubleshoots instruments, equipment, reagents, and patient’s specimen(s) when problems occur.  Notifies the supervisor if unable to solve the issue.
  • Complies with established laboratory and hospital policies for universal precautions and safety procedures; 
  • Follows universal precaution procedures in order to minimize exposure to infectious diseases when handling blood and/or body fluids; 
  • Follows safety policies and procedures when using chemicals.
  • When requested, performs duties required for relief in higher classification in supervisor’s absence.
  • Attends all required safety-training programs and can describe responsibilities related to general safety, department/service safety, and specific job-related hazards.
  • Follows the hospital exposure control plans/blood-borne and airborne pathogens.
  • Promotes effective working relations and works effectively as part of a department/unit team inter-and intra-departmentally to facilitate the department’s ability to meet its goals and objectives.
  • Performs other duties as requested by primary manager that do not compromise moral code of conduct or protocols set in place for patient or employee safety

Qualifications

Minimum Education Required

  • Bachelor of Science in Medical Technology, Medical Laboratory Science, Clinical Laboratory Science, Biology, or Chemistry qualifying the applicant to take the American Society for Clinical Pathology (or equivalent) certification examination.

Minimum Experience Preferred

  • One (1) year clinical laboratory internship

Required Knowledge/ Skills/ Abilities

  • Performs all aspects of pre-analytic workflow appropriate for the specific laboratory section to ensure orders entered correctly, specimens collected are appropriate for the test ordered, and correctly process/transported.
  • Verifies order where necessary.
  • Verifies non-patient information (e.g., collection time) according to established protocol.
  • Handles unresolved orders, troubleshoots where needed.
  • Verifies with physician and/or nurses prior to LIS order entry to resolve unclear, duplicate or otherwise ambiguous orders.
  • Verifies specimens for add-on tests are available and acceptable and generates add-on test orders.
  • Recognizes when fraud and abuse compliance issues require adjustments to the test order.
  • Collecting, receiving and processing of specimens
  • Verifies specimens labeled correctly and completely upon receipt, evaluates specimens for appropriateness and takes necessary corrective action and appropriately documents unacceptable specimens and proper notifications as needed.
  • Prioritizes specimen processing based on established priorities.
  • Aliquots specimens according to established protocols.
  • Recognizes when fraud and abuse compliance issues require adjustments to the test order.
  • Performs all aspects of analytical testing appropriate for the specific laboratory section.
  • Maintains test system integrity.
  • Performs specimen preparation.
  • Performs tests.
  • Performs technical review and interpretation.
  • Troubleshoots and solves problems.
  • Post-test specimen storage.
  • Verifies and reports results.
  • Amends reports.
  • Responds to inquiries.
  • Stores documents and records.
