Description
Mechanical Division (Plumber)
Repairs, maintains, troubleshoots, and installs commercial plumbing systems including HVAC piping systems, rainwater recovery, swimming pool and decorative fountain maintenance. Studies plans, drawings, specifications, and work orders to determine work requirement and sequence of repairs and/or installations. May assist supervisor/foreman with layout sketches, material lists and time estimates. Experience as proficient backhoe operator for installation & repair of light utility piping, ability to fit steel pipe systems and assist welder/ fabricator. Mechanical Division (Plumber) requires a minimum of 3-5 years of plumbing experience or a journeyman level plumber license. Backflow Certification preferred.
Mechanical Division (Electrician)
Repairs, maintains, and installs wiring, motors, transformers, generators, lighting, appliances, circuits, wiring and other electrical system equipment and components in compliance with (NEC) National Electrical Code and local regulations. Operates a variety of electrical testing equipment in locating and determining types of electrical malfunctions. Studies plans, drawings, specifications, and work orders to determine work requirement and sequence of repairs and/or installations. May assist supervisor/foreman with layout sketches, material lists and time estimates. Repairs and maintains high voltage systems. Mechanical Division (Electrician) requires 3-5 years of verifiable electrical experience or a journeyman level electrician license. Virginia State Master Electrician Certification preferred.
Structural Division: (Carpentry/Building Envelope/Roofer)
Cleans, services, repairs and replaces roofs, windows, doors, siding, caulking various surfaces, flashing and gutters on City of Roanoke owned buildings. Develop/maintain database to catalog and maintain information on all City of Roanoke roofs, buildings and structures in order to develop field maintenance schedules and replacement needs. Supervises and participates in the work of a crew engaged in a variety of maintenance and construction activities. Assist supervisor/foreman with layout sketches, material lists and time estimates. Studies plans, drawings, specifications, and work orders to determine work requirement and sequence of repairs and/or installations. Works as rough/finish carpenter to include installation/removal of frame walls, drywall, ceramic tile, carpet, windows, doors, blinds, siding and demolition of structures. Ability to construct or repair office furniture, pour, finish concrete on all city owned buildings. Requires 3-5 years of carpentry experience.
(Paint Crew) - Responsible for prepping surfaces, mixing, matching, and applying paint to various surfaces, completing touchups, and coordinating large painting projects. Assist in selection and purchase of paint supplies from vendors. Requires 3-5 years of verifiable painting experience.
Welding Division (Welder)
Performs various types of welding. Supervises and participates in the work of a crew engaged in highly skilled maintenance, installation and construction activities. Ability to assign and supervise the work of maintenance workers and technicians on installation and removal projects. Ability to follow detailed instructions from a supervisor. Inspects work in progress to assure conformance with instructions. Studies plans, drawings, specifications, and work orders to determine work requirement and sequence of repairs and/or installations. Minimum three years of experience with MIG or TIG or Flux core welding or electrode welding processes; large equipment rigging and reading blueprints. Welding Division (Welder) must have 3-5 years of experience or one of these welding certifications:
Shielded Metal Arc Welding (SMAW) , Gas Tungsten Arc Welding (GTAW) or Tungsten Inert Gas (TIG) , 1G, 2G, 3G, 4G, 5G, 6G or 6GR.
HVAC Division
Performs basic technical work in the maintenance, repair, replacement, and installation of heating, air conditioning and refrigeration equipment, controls and distribution systems. May assist Lead HVAC Technician on the design of HVAC systems including installations and modifications to existing systems; and assists in training other technicians and staff in preventative maintenance of HVAC systems. Must be able to climb/work on ladders/lifts to reach high ceilings or walls. High school diploma or general education degree (GED) with three to five or more years of progressively responsible experience working with complex HVAC systems and equipment including chillers, boilers, package units, VAV systems (direct digital, pneumatic and automated control systems). Requires 3-5 years of verifiable experience or a journeyman level HVAC license. Virginia State Master HVAC Certification preferred.
Each role would require possession of a valid VA driver's permit.

High school diploma or general education degree (GED) and 3-5 years of verifiable experience or training in trades area assigned or equivalent combination of education and experience. Requires possession of a valid VA driver's permit.
ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES
May include the following depending on area of assignment
- Knowledge of pertinent rules and rare sufficient, guidelines, safety orders, departmental operating procedures and safety regulations sufficient to ensure that work is performed in compliance with applicable law.
- Discuss job requirements and receives detailed instructions from supervisor or foreman
- Inspects work in progress to ensure conformance with instructions;
- Maintains accurate log sheets and checklists
- Assists with special events, snow removal and other emergency tasks, including some nights, weekends and holidays, as needed
- Operates heavy and light equipment during snow removal, special events, and other emergency tasks, including some nights, weekends, and holidays when needed
- Adheres to established safety procedures as well as sound safety and housekeeping practices
- Requisitions parts and materials used in the repair of equipment
- Inspects equipment for proper safety and ensure truck is equipped with all necessary equipment for the day's assignment (i.e. water cooler, first aid kit, safety flares, etc.)
- Performs at minimum journey-level trades work in one of the following areas: carpentry, HVAC, electrical, plumbing, and/or welding
- Must be able to climb/work on ladders/lifts to reach high ceilings or walls
- Trains and instructs subordinates (when directed by Supervisor or Foreman)
- Follows safety rules/procedures; avoid known hazards in the work environment.
- Reviews safety procedures before beginning each job with known hazards
- Places avoidance of injury or property damage above all other job requirements
- May be required to operate out of a bucket truck, training will be provided if needed
- May be required to take classes or training to enhance job performance
- Assist with on-call on a rotating basis as requested by Manager or Superintendent (Tuesday at 3:30 PM-Tuesday at 7:00 AM)

CERTIFICATES, LICENSES, REGISTRATIONS
Requires a valid appropriate driver's permit issued by the Commonwealth of Virginia, depending on area of assignment, may require possession of appropriate class A, B or C commercial driver's license with specific endorsements. HVAC Division requires a minimum of a journeyman level HVAC license, will be provide Will be provided 18 months to obtain a Virginia State Master HVAC Certification. Mechanical Division (Plumber) requires a minimum of a journeyman level plumber license, will be provided ample time to obtain a Virginia State Master Plumber Certification. Backflow Certification preferred, if the candidate doesn't have this certification he/she will be provided ample time to obtain a Virginia State Backflow Certification. Mechanical Division (Electrician) requires a minimum of a journeyman level electrician license, will be provided ample time to obtain a Virginia State Master Electrician Certification. Welding Division (Welder) must have one of these welding certifications from SMAW or GTAQ, 1G, 2G, 3G, 4G, 5G, 6G or 6GR.
