Our reagents are trusted by researchers worldwide for their quality and reliability and have played a critical role in breakthroughs across genomics, proteomics, diagnostics and academic research. With a corporate culture rooted in passion, humility and authenticity, we offer a dynamic and inclusive workplace where creativity thrives, voices are heard, and personal growth is celebrated. Whether you are interested in pursuing a research career or supporting our mission through other roles, joining NEB means contributing to meaningful scientific progress in a collaborative, campus-like environment that values both innovation and integrity.
The role
We are inviting applicants for a Development Scientist position within the Applications and Product Development Department. The successful candidate will work both independently and in collaboration with other groups on key strategic projects that align with the scientific interests of the company. This position offers opportunities to develop novel reagents and workflow solutions, engage with academic and commercial customers, attend scientific conferences, and learn from technically and commercially focused colleagues across the company. Title level will be determined based on candidate experience.
How you’ll contribute:
Develop and characterize novel solutions to support protein expression, analysis and modification technologies and workflows, with a particular focus on enabling protein engineering, synthetic biology and biomanufacturing applications.
Develop automated high-throughput assays for protein expression and activity testing.
Collaborate with colleagues across the company to conduct proof-of-principle experiments, de-risk projects, and launch and support products.
Stay current with advances in cell-free biology, enzyme engineering, synthetic biology, and computational protein engineering, and translate relevant innovations into experimental strategies and development programs.
Provide technical expertise, develop content, and communicate results to internal and external stakeholders.
Engage customers and collaborators to identify needs and deliver solutions.
Required Qualifications and Experience:
Ph.D. in Biochemistry, Molecular Biology, Chemical Biology, Bioengineering or related field with 2-4 years of relevant experience and a sophisticated understanding of protein expression (eukaryotic, prokaryotic and/or in vitro expression), protein characterization, and molecular biology.
Ability to work independently and collaboratively across teams while managing multiple priorities.
Scientific enthusiasm and integrity, with the flexibility to learn new skills and adapt in a team environment.
Hands-on experience developing or utilizing CFPS/IVTT systems, protein engineering campaigns, and/or related synthetic biology platforms.
Experience with strain engineering, protein expression construct design, DNA assembly methods, PCR-based workflows, molecular cloning and high-throughput assay design.
Strong quantitative reasoning, experimental design and data analysis skills.
Familiarity with analytical techniques used for protein characterization, such as fluorescence-based assays, electrophoresis, chromatography and mass spectrometry.
Strong interpersonal, verbal, and written communication skills, with a customer support mindset.
What will make you stand out:
Experience with Design of Experiments (DoE), statistical analysis and data-driven optimization approaches is desirable.
Familiarity with computational approaches for protein engineering, bioinformatics, machine learning-assisted screening or sequence-function analysis is preferred.
Estimated base salary hiring range for this position is $87,000-$105,000
Base salary is one component of our generous total rewards compensation package. Employees are eligible to receive:
Annual discretionary profit-sharing bonus
Participation in our Employee Stock Ownership Plan "ESOP" (eligible after two full years of service)
