Position Details

The Department of Communication seeks a full-time, tenure-track faculty member at the assistant professor level with a terminal degree in communication or related field.

A successful candidate will be expected to teach three 4-credit communication courses a semester during the 9-month academic year, including COM 323 Communication and Technology and production courses in emerging media such as COM 346 Writing for Interactive Media. In addition, this hybrid theory/production line may contribute courses to the masters in social and emerging media (MASEM) program and will provide the graduate program with technical expertise in interactive design and in virtual and extended reality though our UX Media Lab. We welcome candidates who can strengthen the critical, cultural, and creative diversity in our curriculum, including updating existing courses and proposing new ones (as needed).

The University of Tampa’s Communication Department houses four vibrant majors: Communication and Media Studies (CMS); Advertising and Public Relations; Communication and Speech Studies; and Journalism. In addition, the department has a prominent role in delivering the Master of Arts in Social and Emerging Media and the Master of Arts in Professional Communication. The CMS curriculum is designed to meaningfully explore critical perspectives on media, culture, and political economy as it prepares students to engage in creative production practice. The successful candidate will demonstrate excellence in undergraduate teaching, maintain an active record of peer-reviewed scholarship, participate in academic advising, and engage in service to the department, college, university, and broader community. We welcome innovative pedagogies, and varied research agendas and traditions of scholarship.

The University delivers challenging and high-quality educational experiences to a diverse group of learners. The University has a strong core curriculum rooted in the liberal arts, an enduring commitment to internationalization that has garnered the Senator Paul Simon Award, and a practical, experiential approach to learning. The University offers more than 200 areas of study, including majors in our colleges of Arts and Letters, Business, Natural and Health Sciences and Social Sciences, Math and Education and 18 master's programs, and 3 professional doctoral programs.

The College of Arts and Letters (CAL) is a place where theory meets practice and expression meets experience. Guided by faculty who are talented artists and distinguished scholars, students come to CAL to study everything from fleeting snaps to enduring works of classic literature. The College is home to eight collaborative and innovative academic departments: Art and Design, Communication, English and Writing, Film, Animation and New Media, Languages and Linguistics, Music, Philosophy and Religion, and Theatre and Dance.

As a community of scholars and artists, the College of Arts and Letters engage in cutting-edge creative work, technological innovation, critical scholarly practice, and dialogue with diverse communities. Faculty and students across CAL work with emerging technologies in cutting-edge facilities including the stunning new Ferman Center for the Arts, the Bailey Art Studios and FabLAB, the historic Falk Theatre, the Sykes Chapel and Center for Faith and Values, and the Cass media production facilities.

Please apply online at ut.edu with cover letter, CV, link to digital media portfolio, and contact information for three professional references. Review of applications will begin immediately and continue until the position is filled.
