About the Role
We are seeking a dedicated and proactive Assistant Manager to join the Laboratory Services Development Team at HKUST. In this pivotal role, you will act as the vital bridge between our laboratory users, other university stakeholders and external contractors or consultants for lab renovation and enhancement projects, as well as new capital projects. You will play a crucial part in ensuring our laboratory facilities are upgraded smoothly, efficiently, and to the highest institutional standards.
Key Responsibilities
Project Coordination & Stakeholder Communication
- Liaise with HKUST laboratory users, other university stakeholders and external contractors/consultants.
- Provide professional support and advice to laboratory users in layout design and planning, as well as compliance with safety requirements and international standards
- Coordinate and streamline communication among all project stakeholders to support efficient day-to-day operations.
- Ensure all complex laboratory requirements are clearly articulated, fully understood, and accurately integrated into contractor planning and execution.
- Facilitate effective collaboration to prevent project delays, misunderstandings, and costly rework abortive works.
Quality Assurance & Compliance
- Take a leading role in quality assurance by actively reviewing and inspecting contractor works.
- Verify that all construction and refurbishment works are comply with tender specifications and relevant regulatory standards.
- Conduct structured site checks and inspections to guarantee that deliverables meet HKUST’s rigorous technical, safety, and performance expectations.
- Safeguard the laboratory environment by ensuring all outputs aligned with the University's engineering and compliance guidelines.
Testing, Commissioning & Technical Oversight
- Plan, execute, and oversee testing and commissioning (T&C) activities for critical Mechanical, Electrical & Plumbing (MEP) systems, including laboratory gas, equipment and furniture installations.
- Monitor installation-related activities and track progress during the T&C stages.
- Confirm that all E&M systems and furnished components function as intended for specialized laboratory operations.
- Provide ongoing technical support, resolve technical issues, and offer expert guidance throughout the entire renovation lifecycle to ensure the timely handover of highly effective laboratory spaces.
Requirements and Qualifications
- Applicants should possess a degree in Electrical, Mechanical, Building Services Engineering, or a related field
- Professional registration (HKIE / CEng) is preferred
- Minimum of 10 years in relevant project management experience in a consultant or contracting firm specializing in MEP design and installation for new builds and A&A projects including laboratory and hospital projects
- Proficiency in AutoCAD and Microsoft Office is required, along with strong spoken and written English and Chinese skills
Appointment to the position will normally be on two-year fixed term contract basis. Starting salary will be commensurate with qualifications and experience. Fringe benefits including annual leave, medical and dental benefits will be provided. A gratuity will be payable upon successful completion of contract.
