Description

Position Summary

The Property Underwriter is responsible for evaluating, pricing, and structuring commercial property risks across both primary and excess layers. This role requires strong technical underwriting judgment, the ability to analyze catastrophe exposure and layered/tower placements, and close collaboration with brokers, reinsurers, and carrier partners to grow a profitable book of business within delegated authority.

What will your job entail?

Key Responsibilities

  • Underwrite new and renewal commercial property business on both a primary and excess basis, evaluating risk quality, exposure, and pricing adequacy in accordance with underwriting guidelines and delegated authority.
  • Analyze property schedules, statement of values (SOVs), loss runs, COPE data (Construction, Occupancy, Protection, Exposure), and engineering reports to assess risk.
  • Evaluate catastrophe (CAT) exposures — including wind, flood, earthquake, and wildfire — using modeling tools (e.g., RMS, AIR/Verisk, CoreLogic) and apply appropriate terms, pricing, and capacity.
  • Structure excess and layered/tower placements, coordinating attachment points, limits, and terms with primary carriers, other excess markets, and reinsurance treaty guidelines.
  • Price risks using rating tools, capacity models, and technical pricing methodologies; negotiate terms, conditions, and pricing with brokers.
  • Review and negotiate policy terms, conditions, exclusions, and endorsements; issue quotes, binders, and policies within authority levels.
  • Manage a book of business to meet growth, profitability, retention, and loss ratio targets.
  • Build and maintain strong relationships with wholesale and retail brokers to drive submission flow and market the MGA's appetite and capabilities.
  • Monitor treaty/facultative reinsurance requirements and ensure placements comply with binding authority agreements and carrier guidelines.
  • Partner with actuarial, catastrophe modeling, claims, and reinsurance teams to inform pricing, portfolio management, and risk selection.
  • Maintain accurate underwriting files, documentation, and compliance with audit and regulatory requirements.
  • Monitor market trends, competitor activity, and capacity conditions across the primary and excess property markets.
  • Participate in carrier and reinsurance partner audits and stewardship meetings.

Qualifications

Required:

  • 3+ years of commercial property underwriting experience, with direct exposure to both primary and excess layers.
  • Strong understanding of property insurance principles, including COPE analysis, CAT modeling, and layered/tower placement structures.
  • Experience underwriting complex, large-account, or catastrophe-exposed property risks.
  • Proficiency with catastrophe modeling software (RMS, AIR/Verisk Touchstone, or similar) and rating/pricing tools.
  • Strong analytical, negotiation, and decision-making skills.
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills; ability to build broker relationships.
  • Bachelor's degree in business, finance, risk management, or related field (or equivalent industry experience).
