Description
The Vernon Hills Public Works Department employs individuals on a temporary/seasonal basis to assist with maintaining Village property. The Department is currently seeking individuals for winter seasonal employment for the duration of six (6) months, with an anticipated start date of November 2, 2026 (negotiable). This is a non-IMRF position, with employment limited to fewer than 1,000 hours. Applicants must be at least 18 years of age. Individuals will be working 40 hours per week, including some nights and weekends for special events and snow removal operations. Under the direct supervision of the Crew Leader, individuals will participate in the daily maintenance of the Village’s infrastructure; including snow and ice removal operations, within one of the following divisions of Public Works:
Street Lighting & Building Maintenance Division: This individual will assist with cleaning of garage and work areas, cleaning of vehicles and equipment, stocking of supplies, changing light fixtures, general painting, and basic repairs . This individual will alsoperform avarietyof advanced plumbing, carpentry, electrical and masonry activities required for the construction, repair, and maintenance of Village owned facilities, buildings, and grounds. A demonstrated proficiency in most of all of these skill-sets is required, along with the ability to use and operate general-purpose hand and power tools and equipment.
Engineering, Streets & Grounds Division: This individual will assist in the repair, construction and maintenance of Village streets, storm sewers, and facilities using rollers, plate compactors, skid steers, wheel loaders,shovels,rakes,and other handheld equipment. This individual will assist with planting of flowers, shrubs, and trees and maintenance operations such as mowing, weeding, cultivating, edging, fertilizing, and watering of Village property. A demonstrated proficiencyin most of all of these skill-sets is required; along with the ability to use and operate general-purpose hand and power tools and equipment.
Forestry Division: This individual will assist in the maintenance of Village trees, including trimming, planting, tree removals, grinding of stumps, chipping, and watering. This individual will also assist with the pick-up and hauling of debris caused by storms and flooding. A demonstrated proficiency in most or all of these skill-sets is required along with the ability to use and operate general-purpose hand and power tools and equipment.
Snow and Ice Removal: This individual will assist in snow and ice removal efforts. This will include shoveling snow at Village facilities, spreading salt, and using various snow removal equipment such as snow blowers, truck mounted plows, and utility vehicles.
The following requirements must be met:
- Be at least 18 years of age
- High School Diploma or equivalent
- Possession of a valid Commercial Driver’s License (CDL) is preferred
- Ability to work 40hours per week; including nights and weekends as necessary
- Passage of a pre-employment physical, drug screen, criminal background check, motor vehicle history report, employment, education and reference check
