Description

The purpose of this position is to assist in the maintenance of the City of Milton and carry-out general duties related to the functions of the Public Woks Department, as well as assist in the maintenance and service City of Milton Vehicles and Equipment.

The Crew Person/Mechanic will receive general day-to-day supervision, direction, and performance evaluation from the Operations Crew Lead and Lead Maintenance Technician who will consult with the Public Works Director.

This represents typical elements and criteria necessary to successfully perform the job.The duties assigned to the Crew Person/Mechanic are to be conducted in a safe, proficient, and professional manner.  Major duties and responsibilities may include, but are not limited to, the following:

Operations Division
  1. Assist with mowing, pruning, mulching, weeding, tree maintenance and planting, using fertilizers and pesticides, and all horticultural duties for the City of Milton Right of Ways, trails, parks, and public facilities.
  2. Assist in the maintenance and construction of park benches, picnic tables, and playgrounds.
  3. Clean and maintain restrooms and pavilions to expected condition.
  4. Assist with litter/trash collection and general overall park grounds cleanliness.
  5. Assist the company contracted for garbage collection as directed.
  6. Install and maintain signs on City property.
  7. Install holiday decorations around the City.
  8. Shovel sidewalks at City of Milton properties and private properties if owners receive violations.
  9. Mow private properties if owners receive violations. 
  10. Assist in laying black top, filling pot holes, and sealing cracks in the maintenance of City streets.
  11. Paint lines on streets using appropriate equipment. 
  12. Respond to weather clean-up emergencies including snow removal, ice removal, and tree debris removal.
  13. Pick up yard waste at the curb, and use appropriate equipment for curbside leaf collection and brush collection. 
  14. Clean streets with sweeper.
  15. Install and maintain street signs.
  16. Plow, salt, and sand roads.
  17. Use bucket truck to maintain street lights and tree pruning.
  18. Operate and maintain tools and equipment including chainsaws, generator, power tools, safety equipment, etc.
Fleet Maintenance Division
  1. Assist with Fleet Maintenance Division jobs and tasks including but not limited to maintain and repair light, medium and heavy duty vehicles as well as specialized equipment owned and/or operated by all City departments to meet local, state and federal regulations.
  2. Maintain detailed records for all maintenance activities and inventory.
  3. Inform the Lead Maintenance Technician of any repairs not able to be completed and work with the Lead Maintenance Technician to determine a resolution.
  4. Perform skilled trade work on light, medium and heavy duty vehicles as well as all specialized equipment owned and/or operated by the City.
  5. Perform upfitting of all police department vehicles as directed by the Lead Maintenance Technician. 
  6. The position demands a deep understanding of all vehicles and equipment with a proactive maintenance approach ensuring minimal down time to maintain continuous operation for all City departments.
Utilities Divisions
  1. Assist utility staff as needed and directed by the Public Works Director for various duties and site maintenance.
General
  1. Respond to questions, concerns, comments, and other issues related to the Public Works Department from the general public, elected officials, or other staff members or refer them to the appropriate staff member.
  2. Assist other departments as needed and directed by the Operations Crew Lead or their designee.  
  3. Carry cell phone and/or radio to maintain availability during normally scheduled work hours.  
  4. Operate vehicles and equipment as needed.
  5. When instructed by the Public Works Director or their designee, the employee may be required to assist in an emergency event, which includes snow events.
  6. Report any vehicle or equipment malfunctions to the Operations Crew Lead or Public Works Director for repair.
  7. Report any damage to City facilities to the Operations Crew Lead or Public Works Director for repair.
  8. Maintain proper daily maintenance of equipment.
  9. Operate City trucks and vehicles on and off public roadways in a safe manner.  
  10. Assist in the training of personnel when requested to do so by the Operations Crew Lead or Public Works Director.
  11. Abide by all safety rules and procedures and participate in safety training and education programs offered by the City.
  12. Report to the appropriate staff member daily assignments as they are completed and keep necessary records.
  13. Work with other departments, private property owners, and other facilities as assigned.
  14. Maintain work area in a neat and organized manner.
  1. High School Diploma or equivalent.
  2. Mechanic Certification or an equivalent combination of education and experience.
  3. Additional education and/or experience as required to perform the essential functions of this position.
  4. General knowledge in the following areas desired:
    1. Construction
    2. Concrete
    3. Vehicle and equipment operation (snow plow, backhoe, etc.)
  5. Ability to work from drawings, technical manuals, and blue prints.
  6. Use of proper safety procedures at all times and in all environments.
  7. Ability to work efficiently in a fast paced environment where projects and priorities change often and quickly.
  8. Ability to communicate effectively and interact well with customers and co-workers in person, by phone, and in writing.
  9. Ability to commit to a teamwork environment, work efficiently in various settings, and prioritize tasks consistent with daily requirements of the division.
  10. Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with employees, other departments, officials, and the public.
  11. Ability to perform duties with considerable independent judgment and initiative under limited supervision.

Special Requirements
  1. Must have valid Wisconsin Driver License.
  2. Must have a Wisconsin Commercial Driver’s License (CDL) within 6 months of hire.
  3. May be required to obtain pesticide application license.
Tools and Equipment Used
  1. Office Equipment – Copy/Scan/Fax Machine, Computer, 10-Key Calculator, Printer, and Laminator.
  2. Hand Tools – Non-electrical hand tools (hammers, wrenches, etc.); electrical power tools (saws, drills, etc.); gas powered tools (weed eater, chain saw, etc.); and yard/garden tools (shovel, rake, etc.)
  3. Communication Equipment – Telephone, cell phone, and radio.
  4. Vehicles – Automobiles, backhoe, brush chipper, fork lift, front end loader / grader, heavy truck / snow plow, light truck (pick up), mower (rider and push), sewer jetter, skid steer, and street sweeper.
  5. Miscellaneous Tools/Equipment – Air compressor, amp meter, cement saw, crack sealer, drill press, grinder, micrometer, rulers, scales, protractors, “walk behind” striper, vehicle jack, voltmeter, welder / welding equipment, and air monitor.
  6. Medical Apparatus / Equipment – First aid equipment and AED.
  7. Cleaning Equipment – Vacuum and broom.
