Role description:

As part of our continued growth in Western Canada, we are seeking an experienced sustainability, environment and community lead to join our expanding team. The role suits a senior practitioner with a track record of delivering environmental, sustainability and socio-economic outcomes on large and complex infrastructure projects in the marine, ports, coastal, heavy civil, roads, rail and transit sectors.

The sustainability, environment and community lead will support the ESDC lead during Engineering Services During Construction, taking projects from design completion through construction activities and project completion certification. The position is based with the site team and supports a field-based supervision group. The role is held on behalf of the Engineer of Record, providing engineering assurance that the environmental, sustainability and community requirements carried in the design are maintained as the works are built. It is not a client, owner’s engineer or contractor compliance function.

Role accountabilities:

In this role you will act for the Engineer of Record on environmental, sustainability and community matters arising during construction. You will confirm that the environmental commitments, mitigation measures and design assumptions carried in the issued for construction documents remain valid in the field, and you will assess proposed design changes, field variations and contractor alternatives for their environmental and community consequences before a position is issued.

You will review contractor method statements, submittals and technical queries from an engineering standpoint where permit conditions or environmental management plans constrain the works, and you will advise the discipline teams where a proposed method departs from the basis of design. You will provide the engineering input the client relies on for regulatory correspondence and condition compliance reporting, while the compliance obligation itself remains with the client and the contractor.

You will lead the sustainability scope carried in our services, applying the Envision framework, assembling credit evidence from the design and engineering disciplines and maintaining the carbon, materials and resilience data attributable to the design. You will coordinate socio-economic, Indigenous and community input into engineering decisions, and support the client in honouring the commitments recorded in the assessment.

You will work with the interface manager so that environmental and sustainability requirements are managed as engineering interfaces, coordinate the specialist subconsultants supporting this scope, and contribute to the ESDC work programme and monthly reporting. As a senior member of the team, you will mentor junior and intermediate practitioners and maintain a high standard of field conduct and reporting quality.

Qualifications & Experience:

• A minimum of 15 years of experience in environmental, sustainability or socio-economic practice, including substantial exposure to major infrastructure, transportation, energy or resource projects in Canada
• Bachelor’s degree in environmental science, geography, planning, engineering, social science or a related discipline. A master’s degree in a relevant field is preferred
• Envision Sustainability Professional (ENV SP) credential from the Institute for Sustainable Infrastructure, or willingness to obtain the credential within the first six months in the role is value added
• Demonstrated experience applying environmental management plans, permit conditions and mitigation measures in a construction environment
• Experience leading socio-economic and impact assessment work for federal or provincial review processes, including Gender Based Analysis Plus
• Proven record of engagement with Indigenous communities on infrastructure or resource projects, carried out with cultural competence and sustained trust
• Working knowledge of British Columbia environmental assessment conditions, federal fisheries and navigation requirements, and port and municipal approval processes
• Certified Environmental Practitioner (EP) designation with ECO Canada, or an equivalent professional credential, is preferred
• Familiarity with recognised sustainability and climate disclosure frameworks, and experience preparing or verifying external sustainability reporting
• Experience with economic impact modelling, including input and output methods used for regional and provincial analysis, is an asset
• Experience on marine, in water or waterfront construction, and an understanding of the constraints those settings impose, is preferable
• Strong working command of the Microsoft Office suite, in particular Excel, Word, Outlook and Teams, and comfort with building and maintaining registers and trackers
• Strong technical writing, with evidence of authorship on regulator facing or externally published documents
• Ability to prioritise daily tasks, manage time well, multitask and troubleshoot while handling several deadlines at once
• Strong communication and presentation skills, both verbal and written, with credibility at site level and at executive level
• Eligibility to work in Canada, a valid driving licence, and the ability to meet site health and safety, orientation and personal protective equipment requirements on an active construction site
• Previous experience working on construction sites is preferable

The salary range for this position is $84,000 - $127,000. The base salary represents Arcadis’ hiring range for this position. Actual salaries will vary and will be based on various factors, such as location, skills, experience, and qualification for the role.
