Description
The Sheriff's Department, Scientific Investigations Division, is recruiting for Sheriff's Crime Scene Specialists II who respond to and collect evidence from crime scenes and perform a variety of duties including fingerprinting, photography, and other technical duties while receiving training and mentoring in advanced crime scene techniques, such as, bloodstain pattern analysis and gunshot trajectory reconstruction. This is the advanced trainee level of the series (Sheriff's Crime Scene Specialist I, II, and III); incumbents work under general supervision while training and acquiring the knowledge and skills required for promotion to Sheriff's Crime Scene Specialist III (up to $98,841 Annually).

CONDITIONS OF EMPLOYMENT
1) Promotion: Incumbents are eligible for promotion to Sheriff's Crime Specialist III ($71,926 - $98,841 Annually) upon meeting the minimum requirements for that class. Incumbents must promote within 36 months or be terminated. Regular status can only be achieved at the Sheriff's Crime Scene Specialist III level.
2) Background: Prior to appointment, applicants will be fingerprinted and must pass an extensive background investigation, including a polygraph examination. Applicants must not have been convicted of a felony.
3) Availability: This department is a "24/7" operation. Applicants must be available for all shifts, including mandatory overtime; refusal of assigned shift may result in removal from the list or termination. The incumbents will be required to work rotating, night, weekend, day, on-call, and graveyard shifts, as well as holidays and weekends.
4) License: A valid California Class C Driver License is required to carry out the essential job-related functions of this position. Mileage reimbursement and proof of automobile liability insurance must be maintained. 3) Availability: This department is a "24/7" operation. Applicants must be available for all shifts, including mandatory overtime; refusal of assigned shift may result in removal from the list or termination. The incumbents will be required to work rotating, night, weekend, day, on-call, and graveyard shifts, as well as holidays and weekends.
5) Physical: Incumbents must be able to climb up and down embankments, and hike short distances over rough terrain, while carrying up to 40 lbs.; work in inclement (hot/cold/wet) weather; and be able to work while wearing an Air Purifying Respirator (APR).
6) Medical: Incumbents must pass a yearly medical exam to verify the ability to wear an APR.
7) Training: This is the second trainee level in the series; incumbents work under general supervision and respond to crime scenes.

Experience: One (1) year of full-time work experience with a law enforcement agency with primary responsibility for crime scene investigations that includes processing latent fingerprints, collecting, documenting, and photographing evidence at crime scenes. (All qualifying experience must be obtained in the field at crime scenes.)

Education: Thirty (30) semester (45 quarter) units of completed college coursework in criminalistics, forensics, or a related physical or natural science, which includes at least 9 semester (12 quarter) units from courses in crime scene investigation, evidence collection, and college-level mathematics (trigonometry is preferred). A list of completed college coursework or transcripts must be submitted with the application.
Substitution: One (1) year of additional qualifying experience may be substituted for the required education.
