Brief Description of Duties

The University of the District of Columbia (UDC), the District’s only public institution of higher education and an urban land grant, minority serving institution, invites applications for a full time, nine month, permanent faculty appointment in Social Work, with eligibility for a summer contract contingent upon the Dean's approval. This position includes serving as the Director of Field Education for the Bachelor of Social Work (BSW) Program within the Division of Behavioral and Applied Health.

UDC enrolls approximately 4,200 students across its associate, baccalaureate, master’s, and professional programs. The Washington metropolitan area provides an exceptional learning environment for students, faculty, and community partner.


Essential Duties and Responsibilities

The Director of Field Education provides leadership and oversight of all aspects of the BSW field education program, in alignment with the Council on Social Work Education’s Educational Policy and Accreditation Standards (EPAS). Responsibilities include developing and maintaining agency partnerships, supporting students and field instructors, ensuring compliance with accreditation requirements, and coordinating field‑related teaching and training activities. The position also includes teaching responsibilities within the BSW curriculum.

 

  1. Coordinate all aspects of the BSW field education program, including placement processes, agency partnerships, student support, and field instructor engagement.
  2. Develop, maintain, and evaluate relationships with field agencies to ensure high‑quality learning experiences aligned with CSWE competencies.
  3. Support accreditation and reaffirmation efforts, including data collection, assessment reporting, and documentation related to field education.
  4. Develop, update, and maintain field education policies, procedures, manuals, and related documents in accordance with CSWE standards and program needs.
  5. Coordinate and deliver orientations, trainings, and workshops for students and field instructors.
  6. Provide guidance to students and agencies to ensure learning agreements, supervision, and evaluation processes meet program expectations.
  7. Teach practice, practicum, and/or elective courses within the BSW curriculum as assigned.
  8. Serve as a faculty mentor to BSW students, providing support related to professional development, field readiness, and career pathways.
  9. Collaborate with program faculty and leadership on curriculum development, assessment, and continuous program improvement.
  10. Perform other related duties as assigned by program and division leadership.

Minimum Job Requirements

  • Master’s degree in Social Work (MSW) from a CSWE‑accredited program.
  • Minimum of two years of post‑MSW professional social work practice experience.
  • Experience teaching undergraduate social work courses or delivering professional training in practice settings.
  • Experience with CSWE accreditation or reaffirmation processes.
  • Experience in curriculum design and experiential or field‑based teaching methods.
  • Licensed (or license‑eligible) social work practitioner in the District of Columbia.
  • Strong interpersonal, organizational, and communication skills.
  • Ability to work effectively with diverse populations and demonstrate cultural humility.
  • Experience supervising clinical, practicum, or field education experiences.
  • Ability to provide leadership to the field education program through practice experience, field instruction, and relevant academic or administrative activities.
  • Demonstrated commitment to practice excellence, professional ethics, and the preparation of emerging social workers.
 
         A candidate for appointment to the rank of Assistant Professor shall be required to meet the following qualifications:
  1. An appropriate terminal degree or agree to complete this degree within a period of time to be specified in the terms of the initial contract; and
  2. At least three (3) years of full-time teaching experience, including two (2) years in an institution of higher education.

Appropriate professional experience and achievements may be substituted when formal teaching experience is limited or absent.

 

When formal teaching experience is limited or absent, the candidate shall be required to demonstrate verifiable potential for effective teaching.


A candidate for appointment to the rank of Associate Professor shall be required to meet the following

qualifications:

  1. An earned doctorate or the highest appropriate credential in the field of specialization, or experience and achievements comparable to the doctorate;
  2. A record of scholarship and professional growth; and
  3. At least five (5) years of full-time teaching experience in an institution of higher education, including three (3) years as an Assistant Professor.

Appropriate professional experience and achievements may be substituted when formal teaching experience is limited or absent.

Collective Bargaining Unit (Union): This position is in the collective bargaining unit represented by National Education Association (NEA) and you may be required to pay an agency service fee through direct payroll deduction.

Visa Sponsorship: At this time, the University of the District of Columbia does not provide sponsorship for visas (e.g. H-1B). This position is also ineligible for Optional Practical Training (OPT).

Residency Preference: 
A person applying for a position who is a bona fide District resident at the time of application for the position, may be awarded a 10-point residency preference over non-District applicants, unless the person declines the preference points. If selected, the person shall be required to present no less than 8 proofs of bona fide District residency on or before the effective date of the appointment and maintain such residency for 7 consecutive years from the effective date of the appointment. Failure to maintain bona fide District residency for the 7-year period will result in forfeiture of employment.
 

Drug-Free Workplace: Pursuant to the requirements of the Drug-Free Workplace Act of 1988, the individual selected to fill this position will, as a condition of employment, be required to notify his/her immediate supervisor, in writing, not later than five (5) days after conviction of any criminal drug statute occurring in the workplace.

Background Investigation: Employment with the University of the District of Columbia is contingent upon a satisfactory background investigation.  The determination of a "satisfactory background investigation" is made at the sole discretion of the University of the District of Columbia.  The University may refuse to hire a finalist, rescind an offer of employment to a finalist or review and may terminate the employment of a current employee based on the results of a background investigation.
