Neurology Section Chief – Specialty Care Service, G.V. (Sonny) Montgomery VA Medical Center

Location: Jackson, MS

Schedule: Monday–Friday, 8:00 AM – 4:30 PM

Position Overview

The Neurology Section Chief provides leadership and strategic direction for the Neurology Section within the Specialty Care Service. The incumbent is responsible for supervising neurologists and associated clinical staff, ensuring high-quality delivery of inpatient and outpatient neurologic care, and maintaining compliance with VA, VHA, and facility policies. The Section Chief oversees clinical operations, general neurology, subspecialty care (stroke, epilepsy, movement disorders, multiple sclerosis, neuromuscular conditions), diagnostic procedures (EEG, EMG/NCS, lumbar puncture), and tele-neurology services.

Primary Responsibilities

• Supervise neurologists, advanced practice providers, and technical staff; oversee scheduling, workload distribution, and clinical productivity.
• Manage Neurology clinic operations, including staffing models, access targets, consult management, and tele-neurology services.
• Perform neurologic evaluations, procedures, and subspecialty care within the scope of privileges.
• Oversee quality metrics, OPPE/FPPE processes, peer review, and compliance with credentialing/privileging requirements.
• Collaborate with primary care, emergency medicine, radiology, rehabilitation, pharmacy, mental health, and social work to optimize multidisciplinary care.
• Participate in teaching activities, staff development, and academic partnerships where applicable.
• Provide leadership for all Neurology staff, establishing clinical priorities, managing workflow, and ensuring adherence to VHA and facility policies.
• Exercise independent judgment in clinical and administrative decision-making, ensure compliance with credentialing and privileging standards, and oversee OPPE/FPPE monitoring.

Work Environment & Schedule

• Monday–Friday, 8:00 AM – 4:30 PM
• Leadership role with administrative and clinical responsibilities within the Specialty Care Service
• Collaborative support from nursing, advanced practice, and administrative personnel

Minimum Qualifications

• You must have an MD or DO degree from a properly accredited medical school in the year you graduated. For foreign medical graduates, the school must have met ECFMG eligibility requirements for your graduation year.
• To work as a VA physician, you must complete an approved residency in Neurology that makes you eligible for board certification, either in an ACGME or AOA program, or through an equivalent combination of training and independent practice in the United States. Non-US residencies can also count if you then have at least three years of licensed practice in the U.S. in relevant duties, and the local medical staff agrees your training and experience are appropriate.
• Current, full, and unrestricted medical license in any U.S. state or territory
• Demonstrated clinical competence in general neurology and subspecialty care, supported by residency case logs or a hospital quality profile documenting recent clinical activity
• Ability to perform diagnostic neurologic procedures, including EEG, EMG/NCS, and lumbar puncture
• Demonstrated leadership or supervisory experience, or the readiness to assume section-level administrative responsibilities
• Eligibility for VA credentialing and privileging in accordance with Medical Staff Bylaws and VA policies

Strongly Preferred Qualifications

• Board certification or board eligibility from the American Board of Psychiatry and Neurology
• Three to five years of specialized experience in neurology
• Experience working in an academic setting
• Experience overseeing subspecialty neurology services such as stroke, epilepsy, movement disorders, multiple sclerosis, or neuromuscular conditions
• Experience with tele-neurology program development or oversight
• Experience working within Veterans Affairs, federal healthcare systems, or similarly regulated environments

Compensation & Benefits

• $320,000–$370,000 salary
• Eligibility for the Education Debt Reduction Program (EDRP) up to $200,000
• Comprehensive total rewards package includes:
