Description

Atlanta Legal Aid Society (“Legal Aid”) seeks a Staff Attorney for its Georgia Senior Legal Unit and its Senior Legal Services Program partnership with the Fulton County Courts Justice Resource Center (JRC). Our non-profit law firm represents low-income persons in a variety of civil legal matters, including family, housing, consumer, employment, health, public benefits, and education law. Georgia Senior Legal Aid provides legal advice, brief service, and referrals to Georgians age 60 and over. The Senior Legal Services Program handles a diverse caseload centered on: housing stability (35%), covering property tax assessments and appeals, homeownership and deeds, tax/mortgage foreclosures and excess funds, and heirs property; probate and estate planning (35%), including basic probate guidance, estate planning advice, and pro bono referrals; consumer protection (10%), involving credit lawsuits, debt relief or bankruptcy, and consumer rights; and public benefits (20%), evenly split across SNAP, Medicare, Medicaid, and Social Security. The unit currently comprises a managing attorney, three staff attorneys, and three paralegals.

Senior Legal Services Program Responsibilities:
  • Consultations: Conduct in-person legal advice sessions at the JRC, and virtual legal advice sessions. Review contracts, brief services negotiation, draft demand letters, and prepare life-planning documents (wills, advance directives, powers of attorney).
  • Public Seminars & Materials: Develop and present community education presentations on senior legal topics, to be presented three times per quarter (travel required to community partners for the presentation). Update self-help instruction packets, court forms, and website FAQs.
  • Referrals: Screen legal matters and provide referrals to other Atlanta Legal Aid offices and units for possible full representation, and refer to external partners for out-of-scope legal issues.
  • Schedule: This portion of the position requires a 20-hour weekly commitment served in a hybrid capacity. Ten hours per week are spent in person at the Fulton County Courthouse JRC across two 5-hour days, conducting walk-in client meetings and telephone consultations on the JRC intake line. The remaining 10 hours per week consist of client telephone consultations and may be completed either remotely or on-site at an Atlanta Legal Aid office.
  • Other tasks as assigned.

  • Review contracts, draft demand letters, and prepare self-help materials.
  • Handle a mixed caseload.

  • Other tasks as assigned.

  • Minimum of three years of relevant legal experience.
  • Excellent legal writing, analysis, advocacy, and work ethic are required.
  • Must possess a working knowledge in a broad range of legal issues and be able to explain sometimes complex concepts to seniors.
