The Student Health Center is responsible for maintaining the health and wellness of Howard University Students.  We provide a wide variety of primary, acute, reproductive health, and specialty care services.  Additionally, the Student Health Center provides the institution with data on immunization compliance and medical clearance. The student health center is committed to providing preventative and holistic approaches to wellbeing in support of students and the institution's mission and strategic plan.

DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES

Leadership & Team Management

  • Oversee and manage front office, clinical support staff, and administrative teams to ensure maximum efficiency.
  • Hire, train, mentor, and evaluate staff performance
  • Foster a culture of accountability, efficiency, and excellent patient service
  • Address workflow issues, staffing needs, and performance gaps proactively

Revenue Cycle & Collections

  • Oversee the implementation of a billing model for the student health center.
  • Oversee all aspects of collections, including front-end workflows, insurance verification, copays, deductibles, and follow-ups
  • Perform billing, coding, claims submission, denials, AR, and payment posting if needed
  • Identify revenue leakage and implement systems to improve collections and cash flow
  • Track KPIs such as days in AR, denial rates, collection percentages, and payer performance

Operations & Compliance

  • Ensure efficient day-to-day office operations and smooth patient flow
  • Navigate operational issues as they relate to the Electronic Health Record
  • Oversee provider credentialing and certification maintenance requirements for the staff
  • Optimize scheduling templates and clinic utilization
  • Maintain compliance with healthcare regulations such as HIPAA, payer requirements, and internal policies
  • Serve as the main point of contact for vendors, billing services, and external partners

Growth & Expansion

  • Partner with providers, the medical director, and staff to identify opportunities for practice growth and revenue expansion
  • Support implementation of new services and programs
  • Assist with process improvement initiatives to scale the practice efficiently
  • Bring ideas and solutions to improve profitability while maintaining quality care

Qualifications

  • Minimum 3–5 years of experience as a medical office manager or similar leadership role
  • Strong experience in medical billing, collections, and revenue cycle management
  • Proven ability to manage teams and hold staff accountable
  • Experience driving operational improvements and practice growth
  • Excellent organizational, communication, and leadership skills
  • EMR and practice management system experience required
  • High level of efficiency with Excel and other database platforms

Preferred Qualifications

  • Administrative experience in a university health center
  • Degree in Business Administration or Health Care Administration
