A Day in the Life
As a Director, you will be a member of the Program Management Office (PMO) as part of the product development team that supports the design, development, and lifecycle management of innovative products within the Surgical Innovations business.The Surgical Innovations Operating Unit sets the standard for Minimally Invasive Surgery (MIS) and Robotic Surgery by creating innovative surgical products and services that focus on obesity and diseases and conditions of the gastrointestinal tract, lung, abdominal wall, pelvic region, and the head and neck.
Medtronic Surgical PMO is looking for director-level talent to help streamline and speed our time to market and enhance technical rigor in at every step of the lifecycle. This position will act as the Operating Unit champion for the deployment, acceleration and sustainability of key technical rigor tools and processes such as predictive modeling and simulation (digital twinning), utilization of Design, Reliability and Manufacturability (DRM), Red X, AI and Lean Sigma into our product development ecosystem at Surgical. This leader will be responsible for building the strategy and overseeing deployment of technical rigor across all Surgical product development sites. The Director will also help design our internal training program and lead the effort to build a culture of continuous, self-directed learning.
- Accountable for identifying and managing technical rigor initiatives, timelines, milestones, metrics, and tactics throughout the product lifecycle needed to achieve the desired business results supporting OU Objectives
- Partner cross-functionally with OU functional leaders to balance divergent objectives and gain cooperation of functional partners in execution of technical rigor into programs via deployment of problem solving and predictive modeling tools and processes and improvement of technical rigor across Surgical
- Assess project issues and integrate organizational changes to Product Development Processes to meet and exceed reliability, quality, performance and productivity goals and objectives
- Provides ongoing technical support and coaching of team members in application of technical rigor methods in Product Development Process activities from initiation through release, partnering with cross-functional teams focused on the delivery of new or iterative products
- Provides leadership and support to the Product Development team in the application of DRM/DFSS Methods for Software and Systems Engineering methods for complex systems, and develops advanced methods of Agile, Software Reliability, etc.
- Present analyzed data to identify and capitalize on improvement opportunities, seek out best practices, identify risks and issues, assess implications, formulate recommendations, and implement innovative process solutions that deliver measurable results
- Create and deliver technical rigor training (examples: DRM, Red X, AI implementation into our processes, advanced statistical techniques, data driven decision-making), provide mentorship to process improvement leaders, deployment of our technical experts into programs and drive improvement teams towards developing employee-centric, sustainable, innovative process solutions.
Autonomy: Experience leading and managing large teams (directly and indirectly) consisting of both experienced professionals and managers. Is accountable for overall program process, performance, and customer satisfaction.
Organizational Impact: Establishes program objectives, timelines, milestones, and budgets. Develops new policies and procedures that affect program management and product development Sits at PMO Leadership table to provide program decisions. Typically has budget or P&L accountability for one or more programs
Innovation and Complexity: Problems and issues faced are difficult and undefined, and require detailed information gathering, analysis and investigation to understand the problem. Problems typically impact multiple workstreams, departments or specialties. Enhances programs management processes to improve program.
Communication and Influence: Communicates and leads meetings with internal and external customers and vendors, conducts briefings to higher level management team.
Influences heavily across functions and businesses while balancing divergent objectives to gain cooperation of other parties on program objectives and execution plans. Communicates with internal and external customers and vendors concerning ongoing operations, programs or processes.
Leadership and Talent Management: Leads, directs and reviews the work of a team of managers, experienced professionals and/or vendors who exercise latitude and independence in their assignments. Establishes daily tasks necessary for successful program execution.
Key Skills & Experience
- Requires a level 8 degree and minimum of 7-10 years of relevant experience, or advanced degree with a minimum of 7 years relevant experience.
- Mastery level knowledge and skills within a specific technical or professional discipline with broad understanding of other areas within the job function.
Nice to Have
- Advanced Degree in engineering or scientific discipline or an MBA
- DRM, Lean Leader, or Six Sigma certification; black belt preferred
- Program Management Qualification: PMP Certification
- Medical device product development experience
- Strong track record of leading complex projects requiring strong influence management skills and willingness and ability to institute change
- Exceptional project management skills; knowledge of process and project planning best practices
- Business acumen; ability to think from an overall “best for the business” perspective
- Able to adapt communication style to varied audiences and stakeholder groups
For Baccalaureate degrees earned outside of the United States, a degree that satisfies the requirements of 8 C.F.R. § 214.2(h)(4)(iii)(A) is required.
