Job Purpose

The Phlebotomist is responsible for providing safe, efficient, and compassionate blood collection and specimen sampling services for patients at Citizen Society. This frontline medical role requires high clinical precision, strict adherence to infection control protocols, and empathetic communication to put patients at ease while ensuring accurate labeling and record-keeping for diagnostic processing.


Key Responsibilities & Duties

Specimen Collection & Patient Care

• Performing veinpunctures, capillary punctures, and skin punctures on patients of all age groups to collect blood samples efficiently and with minimal discomfort.
• Verifying patient identities and cross-checking laboratory test requisitions thoroughly before commencing any sampling procedure to prevent clinical errors.
• Explaining sampling procedures clearly and calmly to patients, addressing anxiety, and providing post-draw care instructions (e.g., pressure application, monitoring for dizziness).
• Upholding strict patient privacy and maintaining high ethical standards of care throughout the diagnostic process.

Infection Control & Safety Compliance
 

• Adhering strictly to biosafety and infection control guidelines established by Citizen Society and healthcare regulatory bodies.
• Maintaining a sterile work environment, ensuring the proper sterilization of the phlebotomy station, tools, and equipment between patients.
• Disposing of hazardous bio-medical waste, including used needles, syringes, and contaminated materials, strictly according to medical waste management protocols.
• Monitoring and maintaining safety supplies (e.g., gloves, alcohol swabs, tourniquets, bandages, and correct vacuum tubes).

Data Entry, Labelling & Sample Logistics
 

• Labelling all collection tubes immediately at the bedside with accurate patient details, matching bar codes, dates, and times of collection.
• Performing accurate data entry of patient test requests, specimen tracking numbers, and collection logs into the organization's database system.
• Preparing and handling specimens properly based on specific test requirements (e.g., refrigeration, protection from light, centrifuging if required on-site).
• Coordinating with the laboratory and admin staff to ensure samples are safely packaged, securely stored, and dispatched for diagnostic testing within required timelines.

Administrative & Team Support
 

• Monitoring inventory levels of phlebotomy consumables regularly to preempt shortages and coordinating with the administrative team for timely procurement.
• Working collaboratively with clinic physicians, dispensers, and administrative staff to ensure smooth daily patient flows and efficient clinic operations.
• Assisting in compiling periodic diagnostic and operational reports for review by management as needed.

Job Specifications & Requirements
 

• Education: Diploma in Medical Laboratory Technology (DMLT), Phlebotomy Certification, or an equivalent clinical nursing diploma from a recognized board or institution.
• Experience: 1–2 years of hands-on experience as a phlebotomist in a hospital, diagnostic lab, clinic, or community health setting. Experience working with NGOs or community welfare organizations is an asset.
• Technical Skills: Excellent manual dexterity and proven skill in locating veins and drawing blood from diverse patient types (including pediatric and geriatric patients); basic computer literacy for accurate data entry.
• Core Competencies: Strong empathetic patient-handling abilities, high emotional resilience, sharp attention to detail, and a strict commitment to medical safety rules.
