Collins Aerospace is one of the world’s largest suppliers of technologically advanced aerospace and defence products. We design, manufacture and service systems and components and provide integrated solutions for commercial, regional, business and military aircraft, helicopters and other platforms.

With facilities located in both Plymouth and Bristol, we design and manufacture products for control, navigation and guidance for surface and air applications in the global aerospace and defence markets. Our world leading products include the innovative MEMS based IMUs and the digital terrain reference navigation system, TERPROM®. Our aggressive growth plan includes development and extension of our current technologies into wider markets including civil aircraft applications with manufacturing of our sensor technology through our Joint Venture Silicon Sensing Systems Limited.

The Technology Development team plays a critical role in the delivery of state of the art MEMS sensors used in these products. This multidisciplinary team is focused on the further development of our world class inertial MEMS technology portfolio and is driving innovation in both sensor design and processing techniques. We are seeking enthusiastic and talented individuals to work within our highly experienced team in this exciting technology area.

Candidates do not require prior experience of working in an R&D environment, however, experience within an academic or industrial environment will strengthen the application. Applicants should have the aptitude to successfully conduct original and innovative research, with the support and guidance from the experienced team they will be part of. The ability to comprehend and assimilate key aspects of the multiple disciplines encompassed within MEMS technology is also critical. The position provides the opportunity to gain valuable experience and expertise at the cutting edge of MEMS inertial sensor development.

What You Will Do

  • Plan and execute experimental investigations to evaluate and advance electronic design and sensor performance.
  • Analyse performance data, interpret results and translate findings into technical recommendations.
  • Provide technical leadership in identifying opportunities for innovation, including emerging electronics technologies such as chiplets, System-on-Chip (SoC) and System-in-Package (SiP).
  • Explore how advances in electronics can deliver competitive advantages in sensor and Inertial Measurement Unit (IMU) designs.
  • Develop and maintain technical documentation, including target performance specifications, experimental findings and design recommendations.
  • Contribute to technical brainstorming, problem-solving and innovation activities.
  • Plan and deliver technical work packages, tracking progress and communicating technical status to stakeholders.
  • Collaborate across engineering disciplines to resolve technical challenges and support the development of high-performance electronic solutions.
