Purpose
The Certified Technician - Coordinator, Sterile Processing & Supply assumes an expanded role that provides knowledge, monitoring, maintenance & coordination of surgical materials, equipment & supplies & provides safe, quality health care services & / or assistance in accordance with level of experience, education, policies & procedures and ensures strict adherence to & performing sterile processing functions & disposal processes of surgical instruments / devices to assure that instruments, equipment & supplies are safe / ready for use.

Functional Role (not inclusive of titles or advancement career progression)
Support – skilled: Certified role (direct or indirect); Must have achieved / successfully completed role specific certification; Provides essential duties appropriate to role / function; Ensures the success of surgeries through adherence to sterilization processes; Collects & decontaminates used supplies / equipment / instruments; Prepares & delivers clean & sterilized instruments & equipment necessary for medical examinations, surgeries, medical carts & clinical procedures; Operates & monitors sterilization equipment.
As Lead / Coordinator responds to problem calls & works cooperatively with surgery & other service areas to jointly resolve issues, develop better services, or identify alternatives; Provides orientation & mentoring of staff, training, education & in-services.
Sterile Processing Lead: Serves as the “point of contact” resource, quality auditor & liaison to assist in instrument preparation & sterilization; Ensures sterile processing functions (i.e., cleaning, decontamination, sterilization, high level disinfection, assembly & packaging, installation, sterile storage & distribution) are performed; Verifies that required instrumentation has been sterilized & is available when needed; Proactively monitors surgical room / suite schedules, anticipates instrument needs, communicates with impacted areas / services / colleagues & assures sterile processing completion; Completes audits & documentation as required (e.g., instrument sets - case cart, post case, tray audits) & tracks / monitors errors; Acts as High Level Disinfection (HLD) Specialist to make sure biological’s (bio’s) are processed & ready in a timely manner.
Surgical Supply Coordinator: Responsible for the oversight of inventory, purchasing & management of surgical materials / supplies. Provides overall surgical equipment support at the site of assignment, including equipment maintenance, processing, troubleshooting & training. Monitors inventory or supplies for shortages & provides guidance to optimize & / or improve inventory performance using available reports & tracking noncompliance; Participates in continuous surveillance, rounding or monitoring for safety & promotes professional accountability for effective levels of practice & education.
Minimum Qualifications
High school diploma or GED; Meets requirements for applicable state(s) of engagement; At least five (5) years of experience in sterilization & instrumentation & surgical & / or materials / supply chain experience with Enterprise Resource Planning (EDP) related systems; Nationally recognized specialty certification according to assignment area (e.g., CSPDT (CBSPD) or CRCST (HSPA)).
Additional Qualifications (nice to have)
Additional certification in at least one of the following:
- Sterile Processing Management (CSPM) or Healthcare Leadership (CHL)
- Certified Surgical Instrument Specialist (CSIS) or Instrument Specialist (CIS)
Certification in materials management, supply chain, production & inventory, logistics or other nationally recognized designations.
