Summary

The Associate Network Engineer provides installation, maintenance and support for Sanford Health's local area and wide area network infrastructure to ensure reliable, secure, high performance data, video, and voice communications.

The Associate Network Engineer is an entry-level technology professional responsible for supporting, maintaining, and learning enterprise network infrastructure across Sanford Health locations and services. This role focuses primarily on fulfilling service requests and planned network work through ServiceNow, including configuration updates, provisioning activities, documentation maintenance, and operational support under the guidance of experienced network engineers.

This position is designed for individuals who are building a career in networking and want hands-on experience supporting large-scale healthcare infrastructure. While troubleshooting is part of the job, this position is not primarily a break/fix incident-response role and has minimal involvement in network project work. Instead, the role is focused on daily operational tasks, service delivery, and maintaining reliable network services while developing foundational enterprise networking skills.

The ideal candidate demonstrates strong technical aptitude, attention to detail, a desire to learn, and the ability to work collaboratively within a team that supports reliable and secure network infrastructure critical to healthcare delivery.

This role is approximately 90% remote; however, candidates must reside within one hour of a Sanford Health major medical center and possess a valid driver's license and reliable personal vehicle to support occasional on-site responsibilities and regional travel requirements.

Job Description

Experience in basic switching, TCP/IP, Wi-Fi, and physical cabling standards/practices required. Experience with network troubleshooting tools and methodologies a plus. Strong knowledge of networking concepts, protocols, and network hardware and software configuration and troubleshooting required.

Key Responsibilities

  • Fulfill network-related service requests through ServiceNow, including standard changes, configuration updates, and infrastructure support tasks
  • Assist with the support and maintenance of enterprise network infrastructure across multiple locations and care environments
  • Perform planned network changes and operational tasks under established standards, procedures, and change management practices
  • Learn and support technologies including routing, switching, wireless networking, WAN/LAN connectivity, and related network services
  • Assist with the administration and maintenance of core network services, including DNS and IP address management (IPAM)
  • Work within a primarily Cisco and Infoblox environment while developing technical expertise
  • Maintain accurate documentation including network diagrams, procedures, standards, and configuration information
  • Collaborate with network engineers, IT teams, vendors, and site stakeholders to complete service requests and operational work
  • Provide operational support for network upgrades, hardware replacements, and lifecycle management activities led by senior engineers
  • Develop troubleshooting skills through mentorship and hands-on support activities
  • Contribute to stable and secure network operations that support clinical, long-term care, and critical care environments
  • Participate in a weekly rotating on-call schedule after completing required training and onboarding

Qualifications

Associate's Degree in a networking, computer science, information systems, or related technology field. Two years of equivalent work experience may be substituted for education.

When applicable, may need a valid driver's license. If valid driver's license is required, must maintain a good driving record.

Required Qualifications

  • Associate degree or higher in Networking, Information Technology, Computer Science, or a related field, or equivalent combination of education and experience
  • 0-2 years of professional experience in networking, information technology, technical support, or related fields
  • Foundational understanding of:
  • TCP/IP
  • Basic routing and switching
  • VLANs
  • WAN/LAN technologies
  • Wireless networking fundamentals
  • VPN concepts
  • Basic network troubleshooting methodologies
  • Strong desire to learn enterprise networking technologies and operational processes
  • Ability to follow documented procedures and manage assigned work effectively
  • Ability to work effectively in a primarily remote environment
  • Strong written and verbal communication skills
  • Valid U.S. driver's license with a satisfactory driving record
  • Access to a reliable personal vehicle and ability to travel to Sanford Health facilities as needed to support operational, training, and business requirements
  • Must reside within approximately one hour of a Sanford Health major medical center and be able to travel to regional locations as needed

Preferred Qualifications

  • Bachelor's degree in Networking, Information Technology, Computer Science, or related field
  • Completion of networking coursework, internship experience, lab experience, or technical projects related to networking
  • Familiarity with Cisco networking technologies
  • Exposure to DNS, DHCP, IPAM, or related network services
  • Familiarity with ServiceNow or other IT service management platforms
  • Experience supporting users, systems, or infrastructure in a technical environment
  • Understanding of operational documentation and change management processes
  • Industry certifications such as CCNA, CompTIA Network+, or similar certifications are a plus

Work Environment

  • 90% remote with occasional on-site responsibilities
  • Candidates must reside within approximately one hour of a Sanford Health major medical center
  • A valid driver's license and access to a reliable personal vehicle are required due to periodic travel to Sanford Health facilities
  • Up to 10% travel to regional locations as needed
  • Participation in a weekly rotating on-call schedule may be required after training and onboarding
  • Work supports infrastructure critical to clinical, long-term care, and critical care operations
  • Opportunities for mentorship, professional development, certification growth, and career advancement within the Network Engineering team

What Success Looks Like

  • You complete assigned service requests accurately and consistently while continuing to build technical knowledge
  • You demonstrate growth in networking concepts, operational processes, and enterprise technologies
  • You follow established standards and procedures while maintaining attention to detail
  • You maintain accurate and thorough documentation
  • You communicate professionally with teammates, customers, and stakeholders
  • You actively seek feedback, training, and development opportunities
  • You contribute to reliable network services that support patient care and business operations
  • You become a trusted contributor to the team's day-to-day operational workload while steadily building the skills needed for future growth into a Network Engineer role

This version clearly positions the role as an entry-level operational networking position, emphasizes the 90% remote work arrangement, establishes the one-hour proximity requirement, and makes the driver's license and reliable vehicle requirement unambiguous while setting expectations that the role is focused on service delivery and network operations rather than project execution.
