Description
The Tower Technician I is a developing field technician on a three-person Utilities One Wireless Services crew. The technician supports tower installation, upgrades, maintenance, and closeout while learning the skills required for safe, reliable field execution.
Key Responsibilities
- Report ready for the assigned workday and review tasks, hazards, equipment, and instructions with the foreman.
- Help receive, count, inspect, stage, load, and unload tools and equipment. Report shortages or damage before they delay the crew.
- Prepare and organize approved hardware, cables, connectors, and tools for installation under the direction of the foreman or Tower Technician II.
- Assist with antenna, radio, mount, cable, grounding, labeling, and weatherproofing work within completed training and assigned duties.
- Provide ground support and assist with lifting activities only within training, under the designated lead’s direction, and using approved methods.
- Complete basic installation and elevated tasks only after training, demonstrated competence, and authorization. Ask for help when instructions or site conditions are unclear.
- Participate in daily safety briefings and understand the hazards, emergency arrangements, and limits of the assigned task.
- Inspect and correctly use assigned protective equipment and tools. Report hazards, equipment defects, fatigue, and unsafe conditions immediately; stop work when necessary.
- Follow site controls for falls, dropped objects, lifting, radiofrequency exposure, electricity, and weather. Remain clear of restricted areas and suspended loads.
- Complete required training and practical evaluations before climbing or performing other specialized work. Participate in refresher training and drills appropriate to the role.
- Follow approved instructions and do not operate unfamiliar equipment, alter live systems, or attempt work beyond training and authorization.
- Understand assigned daily tasks and report completion, questions, and delays to the foreman. Support the crew’s work sequence and keep the next task prepared.
- Record actual hours daily with the correct project and activity codes, including required preparation, loading, meetings, training, and reporting. Record travel and waiting time for payroll review.
- Obtain direction through the foreman before working beyond the approved schedule. Report unexpected overtime and record all hours worked, whether or not approved in advance.
- Never work off the clock or change hours to fit a budget. Follow required breaks and report timekeeping errors for correction.
- Capture photos, labels, equipment counts, and other records as instructed. Report errors and rework honestly so the crew can correct them.
- Keep tools, supplies, and the work area organized. Return equipment to its assigned location and help secure the shared vehicle and locking trailer.
- Protect installed equipment and customer property. Separate reusable items, returns, and waste according to project instructions.
- Assist with final checks, cleanup, inventory, and closeout tasks before the crew leaves the site.
- Support vehicle and equipment checks and report defects. Drive company vehicles or operate equipment only when appropriately licensed, trained, and authorized.
Skills, Knowledge and Expertise
- Mechanical aptitude and ability to learn safe use of hand tools, power tools, installation methods, and field reporting practices.
- Ability to follow instructions, ask questions, communicate hazards, and work reliably as part of a small traveling crew.
- Willingness and ability to complete required training and practical evaluations before performing climbing, rescue, rigging, or other specialized duties.
- Ability to use a mobile device for timekeeping, photos, checklists, and basic work records.
- Ability to report reliably to the designated crew departure point and fulfill the regional travel and physical requirements.
- Prior experience in tower work, telecommunications, construction, electrical support, or another hands-on trade.
- Existing relevant safety training, such as OSHA 10-hour construction, first aid, radiofrequency safety, or tower climbing training.
- Familiarity with basic drawings, measurements, cable handling, and equipment identification.
- Valid driver’s license and eligibility for company authorization as a backup crew driver.

- Handle tools and equipment using approved lifting methods, team assistance, or handling aids; work outdoors on uneven terrain and in changing weather when conditions are safe.
- Travel for field assignments and communicate clearly with crew members during climbing, lifting, and other coordinated work.
