The Director & Business Architect, Investment Management provides strategic business leadership for the Portfolio Management workstream within BMO’s Wealth Technology Transformation Program. The role defines and advances the future-state capabilities, target operating model, processes and technology requirements supporting BMO Wealth’s full-service brokerage, self-directed brokerage and private investment counsel businesses.
Key Accountabilities
Strategic Business Architecture & Future-State Design
- Define the scope, vision and future-state architecture for the Portfolio Management workstream, including business capabilities, operating models, processes and experiences.
- Develop and maintain the business architecture roadmap, aligning strategic objectives with program priorities and delivery.
Business Transformation & Delivery
- Translate the target-state architecture into prioritized business requirements and implementation plans across the Portfolio Management workstream.
- Challenge existing approaches, introduce industry-leading practices and drive timely decisions across stakeholder groups.
- Balance transformation priorities with operational and delivery commitments.
Portfolio Management Subject-Matter Leadership
- Act as the senior business authority for portfolio-management capabilities, processes and operating models.
- Apply industry, competitive and investment-management expertise to evaluate proposed capabilities and guide business decisions.
- Ensure future-state solutions reflect portfolio-construction practices, managed-account trends and advisor and client needs.
Cross-Pod Integration & Stakeholder Leadership
- Partner with leaders across the Program and the broader organization to manage dependencies and deliver integrated end-to-end solutions.
- Coordinate across Investment Management, Technology, Operations, Compliance, Product, Client Experience and other stakeholder groups.
- Influence senior stakeholders, build consensus and resolve competing priorities.
- Lead workshops, design sessions and “Day in the Life” validation exercises.
- Translate complex information into clear recommendations and executive-level decision materials.
Governance, Risk & Regulatory Oversight
- Embed regulatory, compliance, risk, governance, audit and operational-resilience requirements in future-state design.
- Support the design of controls across Portfolio Management, Performance Measurement, Fees, IPS and Risk Assessment processes.
- Identify business risks and recommend mitigation strategies throughout design and implementation.
Qualifications
Education
- University degree in Business, Finance, Economics, Commerce or a related discipline.
- MBA, CFA Charterholder or CIM designation considered an asset.
Experience
- Minimum 10 years of progressive experience in private wealth, investment or portfolio management, business architecture, product management, consulting or business transformation.
- Firsthand experience leading a team or function responsible for end-to-end investment solutions for HNW/UHNW clients.
- Experience leading large-scale transformation or platform-modernization initiatives in a regulated, risk-sensitive environment.
- Working knowledge of wealth-management operations, including SMA/UMA centralized trading and Advisor-as-Portfolio-Manager programs.
- Experience working with technology delivery teams; familiarity with agile methods, tools and terminology is preferred.
Knowledge & Leadership Capabilities
- Deep understanding of Canadian private wealth, portfolio-management operating models, fees, performance reporting, IPS frameworks and risk-assessment methodologies.
- Strong business architecture, process-design and requirements-management capabilities.
- Ability to influence senior leaders, navigate ambiguity and drive decisions across complex stakeholder groups.
- Exceptional analytical, facilitation, communication and presentation skills.
Portfolio Management Workstream Scope
The Portfolio Management workstream encompasses the managed-account lifecycle, including discretionary and advisor-managed models, IPS management, portfolio customization, asset-allocation models, bulk trading, loose-securities modelling, performance measurement, tax-loss harvesting and client fees.

Salaries will vary based on factors such as location, skills, experience, education, and qualifications for the role, and may include a commission structure. Salaries for part-time roles will be pro-rated based on number of hours regularly worked. For commission roles, the salary listed above represents BMO Financial Group’s expected target for the first year in this position.
