Description
ESSENTIAL DUTIES & RESPONSIBILITIES
(These are illustrative in nature and are not meant to be a comprehensive list)
- Completes the preventive maintenance on vehicles, trailers, or heavy equipment such as oil changes, tire rotation, replacing filters, servicing transmissions, lubricating chassis, and drivelines
- Performs engine diagnostics with diagnostic scan tools. Conducts test drives to verify drivability complaints, and to verify repairs made
- Removes and replaces all parts, and components as necessary to repair mechanical, electrical, and hydraulic systems
- Inspects, adjusts, repairs, and replaces hydraulic brake systems, heating and air conditioning systems, driveline and suspension systems, and engines and transmissions
- Repairs hydraulic systems including pumps, motors, cylinders, valves, as they pertain to heavy vehicles and equipment in the public works fleet
- Maintains written records of work performed in the form of “preventative Maintenance Safety Inspection and Service Forms”
- Maintains shop equipment and work space cleanliness.
- Ensures all safety components/features from all equipment are operational and in proper use
- Strives to increase productivity by completing maintenance and repair work in timely and efficient manner
- Maintains equipment and parts, and determines inventory spare part levels
- Adheres to all GMPs and relevant SOPs
- Completes work orders on all vehicles
- Maintains a clean, organized and safe work area, follows OSHA safety procedures and guidelines
- Follows OSHA safety procedures and guidelines
- Follows and adheres to all Hazmat compliance and Spill Prevention Control & Counter measurement Plan (SPCC)
- Performs preventative maintenance, lubrication and adjustments according to manufacturer’s guidelines on snow removal machines, heavy equipment, and other company vehicles

KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND ABILITIES
- Considerable knowledge of the mechanics and operating principles of both diesel and gasoline internal combustion engines and hydraulic systems
- Knowledge and ability to perform a variety of repair, overhaul, preventative maintenance, and operational readiness of all public works equipment
- Knowledge of occupational hazards and safety precautions
- Employee must provide their own tools sufficient enough to perform all work described above on all the public works equipment
- Ability to cut steel and aluminum with gas torches, plasma torch, or electrical equipment
- Ability to weld mild steel, in the form of MIG, and stick welding
- Ability to read, interpret, and apply information contained in technical repair manuals, and electrical diagnostic equipment
- Ability to follow oral and written directions
- Must be willing to accept assignment to mandatory overtime for emergency duties including snow and ice removal as required, including evenings, weekends and holidays
- Must exhibit good judgment in daily maintenance activities
- Must exhibit the ability to learn and apply new skills
- Ability to perform in a courteous and professional manner at all times
- Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with coworkers and superiors
- Ability to stand and walk for extended periods of time
- Ability to bend, reach, kneel, squat, crouch, crawl, push/pull Ability to tolerate exposure to fluids and solvents in vehicle repair work
- Ability to perform continuous manual and physical labor while standing on a cement floor
- Ability to lift and carry objects weighing up to 80 pounds (heavier objects with the assistance of another person) for distances up to 100 feet.
- Ability to exert up to 100 pounds of pressure using tools that tighten, loosen, or cut.
- Ability to work in all types of weather conditions, including major rain, snowstorms, and any department related emergencies
- Ability to work in a wide variety of environmental conditions depending on work assignment including but not limited to dusty, cold, hot, noisy environments
REQUIRED QUALIFICATIONS
- High school, vocational technical school or GED graduate
- 5 years in automotive maintenance and repair
- 1 Year welding experience
- A valid commercial driver’s license class B
PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS
- Heavy duty commercial fleet repair experience
- Valid ASE light duty and heavy-duty master technician certificate
- ASE certificates
SCHEDULE
- Monday – Friday, 7:00 am – 3:30 pm
