Positions Available:Pool Lifeguard P/T – Trainee: $18.14 per hour – ideal for individuals interested in becoming certified lifeguards who do not currently possess the required certifications.
Pool Lifeguard P/T: Starting at $21.00 per hour – for applicants who currently possess the required lifeguarding certifications.
General Statement of Job:
The Pool Lifeguard position is essential to ensuring the safety and well-being of all patrons using the City’s aquatic facilities. This position maintains surveillance, enforces pool rules and regulations, assists and rescues swimmers in distress, and administers First Aid and CPR as needed. The position performs related duties as required and works under regular supervision.
Trainee Eligible:
The Pool Lifeguard position is essential to ensuring the safety and well-being of all patrons using the City’s aquatic facilities. This position maintains surveillance, enforces pool rules and regulations, assists and rescues swimmers in distress, and administers First Aid and CPR as needed. The position performs related duties as required and works under regular supervision.
Trainee Eligible:
This classification may be filled at the trainee level. Individuals appointed without the required lifeguard certifications must successfully complete all City-provided training and obtain the certifications required for the Pool Lifeguard classification within the timeframe established by the City.
- Maintain constant surveillance of assigned areas to recognize and respond to emergencies.
- Enforce all aquatic facility rules, regulations, and safety policies in a professional and consistent manner.
- Recognize signs of swimmer distress and perform water rescues when necessary.
- Administer first aid, CPR, AED, oxygen, and other emergency care within the scope of certification.
- Activate and participate in the facility's Emergency Action Plan (EAP) during emergencies.
- Perform water entries from pool deck, lifeguard stand, or other designated rescue locations.
- Conduct daily inspections of safety equipment, rescue devices, first aid supplies, and assigned work areas.
- Clean the pool and related facilities on a regular basis.
- Meets and greets patrons, resolves conflicts, and explains pool rules, regulations, and policies.
- Performs pool opening and closing procedures.
- Cleans and maintains swimming pool filters and related facilities.
- Take part in training programs to improve lifeguarding skills.
- Registers instruction program participants.
- Sells pool permits, operates cash register.
- Assists with special events.
- Performs related tasks as required.
Knowledge of:
- Water safety rules and of lifesaving and first aid practices and techniques.
- Cleaning and maintenance requirements for large pools and related equipment and supplies.
Skilled in:
- Swimming, demonstrating considerable strength and proficiency.
- Providing excellent customer service to pool visitors.
- Maintaining vigilance and quickly identifying potential hazards.
- Administering first aid, CPR, and AED in emergencies.
Ability to:
- Maintain chemical balance of pool water.
- Work safely with toxic chemicals.
- Enforces rules and remains calm under stress.
- Clean and maintain a swimming pool and related facilities.
- Pass annual requalification testing.
- Any combination of education and experience equivalent to graduation from high school.
- Must possess current certifications through the American Red Cross in Lifeguarding (Including Deep Water) with CPR/AED for Professional Rescuers and First Aid OR Candidates appointed under the trainee-eligible provision who do not possess the required certifications at the time of hire must successfully complete City-provided training and obtain all required certifications within six (6) months from hire date.
- American Red Cross Water Safety Instructor (WSI)
- Ability to pass American Red Cross Water Safety Instructor (WSI), Automated External Defibrillator (AED) and Oxygen Administration classes (AEO) during first year of employment.
- Candidates must successfully pass the City’s required swim skills evaluation to be considered for appointment to the position. The evaluation will include:
- Swimming 300 yards continuously using freestyle, breaststroke, or a combination of both strokes
- Treading water for two (2) minutes using only the legs
- Completing a timed swim and retrieval of a submerged dive brick
- Demonstrating proficiency in required water rescue scenarios
- Demonstrating proficiency in CPR and choking-response scenarios

- Continuously work in an outdoor area where exposure to animals, reptiles and/or insects may occur.
- Continuously work with equipment or perform procedures where carelessness would probably result in minor cuts, bruises or muscle pulls.
- Continuously maintaining regular in office or onsite attendance.
Essential Employee Designation
When normal operations of City departments are suspended or interrupted due to a declaration that a state of emergency exists, any employee may be deemed essential by the City. For the preparation and/or continuation of emergency operations or for special work detail, employees deemed necessary shall be required to work.
