Description

The Quality Manager is responsible for interpreting, implementing, and maintaining the quality and environmental ISO standards where appropriate. The position is also responsible for coordinating with the department heads to maintain an effective quality system; maintain the labs in full compliance with regulatory requirements, business controls, quality, environmental and customer requirements. This position should provide technical and chemistry-based support for product quality, contamination investigations, blending issues, process deviations, and customer concerns, and lead root cause investigations involving product quality, laboratory results, raw materials, manufacturing processes, and customer complaints, utilizing chemical and analytical troubleshooting techniques. Control nonconforming products until deficiency is corrected. Also responsible for overseeing all quality department operations at the facility. Must be able to minimize negative impacts to the environment in all areas of operation. The Quality Manager also identifies and records problems (non-conformances, incidents and near misses); initiate, provide, implement, and verify solutions to those problems. Must ensure continuous improvement in all areas pertaining to the job which include quality, health, safety, security, and environmental.


Responsibilities

  • Analyze laboratory and process data to identify trends, quality concerns, contamination risks, and opportunities for improvement.
  • Lead investigations into product contamination, off-specification materials, blending inconsistencies, and customer quality complaints.
  • Apply chemistry principles and analytical techniques to troubleshoot manufacturing, storage, packaging, and blending processes.
  • Interpret laboratory test results and work with operations personnel to identify root causes and implement corrective actions.
  • Serve as the primary technical resource for quality-related troubleshooting involving products, raw materials, process equipment, and customer requirements.
  • Review Certificates of Analysis (COAs), product specifications, laboratory reports, and customer quality requirements for compliance.
  • Chart critical data which may include certificate of analysis data, late shipments, vendor loss trends, right first time blending, etc.
  • Handle vendor problems and customer vendor problems as requested by the customer
  • Create and edit forms, procedures, charts, etc. relating to the Quality System and reviews all documents before issuance
  • Perform and lead internal audits for the Quality ISO Standard, where appropriate
  • Ensure quality system is established, implemented, and maintained at both sites
  • Report on quality system performance
  • Chair annual management review meeting
  • Participate in customer stewardship (and related) meetings
  • Create and edit documentation relating to operations to satisfy the Quality and Environmental Standards and customer specific requirements
  • Work with customers to develop and/or revise documentation needed to satisfy their specific requirements including all raw material/packaging material/in-process/finished product specifications and product start up specifications as well as any quality related requirements or amendments
  • Handle all quality related issues with customers including product service reviews, customer complaints and requests, customer visits and audits when quality related
  • Monitor, measure, and report on perceived Customer Satisfaction levels.
  • Manage and supervise personnel to assure performance toward department objectives.
  • Organizes Quality Improvement Teams (which may be cross departmental) to resolve problematic quality issues
  • Oversee corrective and preventive action (CAPA) systems.
  • Manage and supervise laboratory personnel and laboratory operations; serve as laboratory backup when needed.
  • Maintain proficiency in laboratory instrumentation, testing methodologies, and chemical analysis techniques relevant to facility operations.

Education and Experience

  • High School Diploma or equivalent
  • Bachelor’s Degree in science preferred
  • Minimum 5 years of quality, laboratory, chemical manufacturing, petroleum, specialty chemical, or related industry experience.
  • Demonstrated experience investigating product quality issues, contamination events, process deviations, or customer complaints.
  • Working knowledge of laboratory testing methods, quality systems, and root cause analysis techniques.
  • Valid Driver’s License
  • TWIC (Transportation Workers Identification Credentials) for access to IMTT’s terminal locations.

Skills and Abilities

  • Clear and concise written and verbal communication skills in the English language.
  • Ability to understand written and verbal communication in the English language.
  • Ability to make decisions in a variable environment.
  • Ability to communicate with all other terminal departments.
  • Experience in the use of computers including Microsoft Office software (Excel and Word).

Hours of Work

  • Typical hours of operation are Monday through Friday; hours will vary based on business needs.
  • This is an exempt, salaried position. The role requires flexibility as business needs require.
  • Occasional travel may be necessary, sometimes with little or no advance notice.

  • While performing the duties of this job, the employee is regularly required to talk or hear.
  • This is largely a sedentary role; however, some filing is required. This would require the ability to lift up to 25 pounds.
