JOB SUMMARY:Within the context of a patient, client and family-centred model of care and, in accordance with the Mission, Vision and Values, and strategic directions of Providence Health Care, promotes a safe, respectful, and civil working environment for patients, residents, families, visitors and staff. Reporting to the designated Occupational Therapy Site Leader, and receiving overall direction from the Professional Practice Leader and guidance and support from the Research, Education and Practice Coordinator, the position supports the interdisciplinary program/team in achieving program, patient goals. Functions as an expert practitioner, educator, consultant and researcher by applying a conceptual model and relevant theory at an advanced level to assess, plan, implement and evaluate the delivery of occupational therapy care across acute care including medically and functionally complex populations. Inherent in these functions is the administrative responsibility and authority to participate in decision making, policy development and program planning for the occupational therapy practice.QUALIFICATIONS:Education, Training and ExperienceMaster’s degree in Occupational Therapy. Five (5) years clinical experience, including three (3) years recent related experience in acute/physical medicine setting caring for medically and functionally complex patients or an equivalent combination of education, training, and experience. Completion of additional courses in areas such as advanced assessment skills, self-management, complex pain management, seating/wheelchair assessment and provision, pressure injury prevention, assessment and provision of collars and functional cognition assessments. Current full registration as an Occupational Therapist with the College of Health and Care Professionals of BC (CHCPBC). Eligible for membership with the Canadian Association of Occupational Therapists.Skills and AbilitiesBroad knowledge of the treatment and management of patients with surgical, orthopedic, cardio-pulmonary conditions. Demonstrated ability to teach, demonstrate techniques and facilitate learning.Demonstrated ability to organize work.Ability to work independently and prioritize issues and workload.Knowledge of legislation and government policies and procedures related to healthcare.Ability to operate related equipment.Physical ability to carry out the duties of the position.3.1 Performs occupational therapy assessments, program planning, interventions, discharge planning and follow-up for the medically and functionally complex populations using evidence-based occupational therapy techniques and practices.3.2 Contributes to an inter-disciplinary approach to patient care and program related issues by attending ward rounds and team conferences to exchange information in patient issues related to medically and functionally complex patient care and complex discharge planning.3.3 Acts as a clinical resource consultant in physical medicine practice areas by teaching and/or training other occupational therapy staff and health care members within Providence Health Care and other health care facilities and agencies. 3.4 In consultation with the Research, Education and Practice Coordinator and Practice Educator, assesses need for and organizes educational in-services for occupational therapists and other hospital and community members.3.5 Develops, implements, and evaluates written policies, procedures and practice standards, assessment forms, reference and patient materials, program descriptions, audit tools and clinical best practice guidelines related to medically and functionally complex patient populations. 3.6 Participates in clinical informatics work including the design and optimization of electronic health information systems and related standards, protocols, procedures and education.3.7 Participates in the quality improvement activities of the Occupational Therapy Department. Supports departmental and multidisciplinary clinical research initiatives related to medically and functionally complex patient populations in collaboration with the Research, Education & Practice Coordinator by generating questions, assisting in writing proposals, participating in data collection and interpretation, and identify implications of study findings for clinical practice within departmental resources. Identifies and partners with other rehab interdisciplinary clinicians to support research initiatives.3.8 Designs/plans orientation program for staff and students related to medically and functionally complex patients populations. Provides input into the evaluation of students and staff as required.3.9 Provides clinical direction to Rehabilitation Assistants and other support personnel.3.10 Provides clinical supervision to and evaluation of students. Participates in the planning for student practicums and supervises students working in designated area.3.11 Attends and participates in Program councils and task groups to support strong interdisciplinary focus within the Program.3.12 Attends and participates in professional practice forums, and with professional associations related to physical medicine practice.3.13 Makes recommendations for equipment and resource materials required to enhance patient care. Monitors and controls levels of supplies and equipment and reports equipment malfunctions when necessary. Arranges for equipment maintenance as required.3.14 Maintains required patient health record reports, workload statistics and related documents. 3.15 Performs other related duties as assigned.
