Job Description Summary:

William & Mary’s Advising Center supports students’ academic accomplishments across the undergraduate experience from matriculation to postgraduate fellowships. The Academic Advisor at the Advising Center provides advising services to undergraduate students and supports fellowship awareness and preparation, while contributing to advising initiatives and student success programming.

Responsibilities include:
• Provide accurate and timely guidance on general education requirements, majors, minors, course selection, and academic policies.
• Support advising initiatives and assessment efforts.
• Assist with advisor-student matching processes.
• Develop advising resources to support student learning and engagement.
• Coordinate advising-related events and information sessions.
• Refer students to appropriate campus resources and support services.
• Maintain knowledge of academic policies, campus resources, and best practices in academic advising.
• Participate in trainings and professional development opportunities.

Job Description:

Required Qualifications:

  • Master's degree in higher education administration, counseling (clinical mental health or school), K-12 curriculum and instruction, school psychology, or an Arts & Sciences discipline.

  • Experience in academic advising and/or related areas such as career planning, student services, or counseling in a higher education setting. Professional experience gained through a related graduate program will be considered.

  • Experience leading workshops, information sessions, or similar group events for students, faculty, and/or staff.

  • Excellent attention to detail and time management.

  • Strong interpersonal and communication skills.

  • Demonstrated ability to work independently while contributing effectively as part of a collaborative team.

  • Proficiency with Microsoft Office Suite and ability to learn and effectively use additional technology platforms and student information systems.


Preferred Qualifications:

  • 2+ years of academic advising experience.

  • Experience supporting first-generation, limited income (FGLI), transfer, veteran, or other student populations.

  • Experience working effectively with diverse stakeholders including students, faculty, department chairs, program directors, deans, administrators, and staff.

  • Experience using student information systems such as Banner, Degree Works, or Workday Student.

  • Knowledge of undergraduate curriculum, academic policies, and student success practices.


Conditions of Employment:

  • This position may require additional hours beyond the typical work week, including occasional evening or weekend hours.

  • Hybrid (works remotely one day a week after a 6-month onboarding period).

Compensation range: Up to $56,000 commensurate with qualifications

Job Duties:

70% - Academic Support:

  • Assist and support undergraduate students with course selection, academic success strategies, selecting majors/minors, and developing post-graduation plans.

  • Provide correct, up-to-date information about all W&M and program-specific academic program requirements.

  • Provide correct interpretations of W&M policies, rules and regulations.

  • Guide students in identifying their interests, abilities, skills, and academic goals.

  • Inform students of potential post-graduate scholarship or fellowship opportunities.

  • Work with Advising Center administration to track student progress by running reports, analyzing student data, and communicating with students.

  • Meet with academic probation students and reinstated students to create academic success plans.

  • Collaborate with faculty advisors to support student academic planning needs with a focus on specific student population needs (e.g. declaring a major).

30% - Programming, Special Projects, & Collaboration:

  • Conduct group advising sessions, advising workshops, orientation sessions and/or co-sponsor events with other support offices.

  • Work closely with key campus partners (e.g. Registrar, STEP, faculty, Student Affairs) to ensure that this role effectively connects advisees to campus resources.

  • Facilitate programming related to academic planning; including supporting the first-year online module "College Studies" (e.g. content creation, editing, assignment review), continuance, and campus academic resources, to reduce unique barriers to academic success for undergraduate student populations with a focus on one of the three groups below:

    • First year students (social class freshman)

    • Second year students (social class sophomores)

    • Transfer students (traditional transfer & transfer freshman)

  • Work with student leaders in development of peer advising skills.

  • Collaborate with Advising Center colleagues to accomplish office programs and projects.
