Description of Work

You must apply by 11:59 PM prior to the posted closing date.This posting is for a Transportation Worker III in the Graham County Maintenance Unit. Work will consist of a wide range of progressively responsible maintenance tasks in the preventive maintenance, repair, and construction of State Maintained roads and road features. Work will include pipe installation, shoulder and ditch maintenance, asphalt pavement repair, installation of traffic control devices, installation of erosion control devices, operating various pieces of construction equipment, hand, and power tools. This position will also respond to emergency response situations including traffic accidents, snow and ice removal and other emergencies as they occur. This position will operate equipment such as a backhoe, track hoe, track loader, skid steer and dump truck. Employee will be subject to extreme environmental conditions, in addition to hazards at highway construction sites, including heavy equipment and highway traffic.
Work also includes reading and interpreting plans, determining personnel, equipment and material needed to complete assigned maintenance tasks. Employee is responsible for making appropriate adjustments of plans to meet field conditions, planning, monitoring and ensuring safety standards are adhered to, daily documentation of personnel, material and equipment usage, responding to public inquiries, attending training and continuing education classes to keep up to date on all state and federal regulations and maintaining certifications in all required areas.
The employee must safely be able to lift and carry 50 lbs. The selected applicant must be able to legally operate a Class A CDL required equipment/trucks with both manual and automatic transmissions at the time of hire or within 360 days of hire date. Pre-employment drug testing is required for this position. As a condition of employment, a release form (ALCDRG-01) and a background statement (ALCDRG-06) must be completed and signed allowing the NCDOT to check with previous employers for the past three years about controlled substances and alcohol testing. Safety toe footwear is required.
Knowledge Skills and Abilities/Management Preferences
Salary Grade and Salary Range: NC06 $35,596-$62,294
Management prefers applicants with the following:
- Knowledge of Intermediate Work Zone Safety and NCDOT Workplace Safety policy and practices.
- Experience in one of the following: shoulder and ditch maintenance, pipe installation or asphalt patching.
- Demonstrated ability to supervise and train others in equipment operations as well as directing the daily activities of a work crew.
- Experience in snow and ice removal operations.
- Experience in the operation of at least 2 pieces of the following equipment: backhoe, tandem dump truck, motor grader, front end loader, forklift, force feed loader, asphalt distributor, asphalt patcher, crack sealing machine, track excavators, skid steer or sweeper
Minimum Education and Experience

High school or General Educational Development diploma and five years of experience operating equipment directly related to the area of specialization; or equivalent combination of education and experience.
Necessary Special Requirements Either possession of a current Commercial Driver’s License on the date of hire, OR the North Carolina Commercial Driver’s License must be obtained through completion of on-the-job training and all requirements mandated by Federal Motor Carrier Safety Regulations (Federal Registry 49 CFR 383) within 360 days of the date of hire.
