Overview
This individual is a clinically competent, registered, professional nurse who has demonstrated expertise in the perioperative field. He/she effectively delivers perioperative care to the surgical patient through the nursing process of assessment, planning, intervention, implementation, and evaluation.
Responsibilities
Aseptic Technique & Surgical Support
- Demonstrate full competency in scrub and surgical routines, including proper scrub, gowning, and gloving techniques for self, surgeons, and assistants.
- Monitor aseptic practices continuously in all assigned roles (scrub, circulator, assistant).
- Anticipate surgeon needs and recognize procedural sequences across all surgical specialties.
- Pass instruments accurately and efficiently, ensuring full readiness for all assigned procedures.
Sterilization & Equipment Management
- Follow established protocols for autoclaves and Steris units, including performance of required daily A‑Tests and biological tests.
- Perform proper care, handling, and assembly of instruments for reprocessing.
- Complete thorough documentation of all flash and Steris cycles according to protocol.
- Maintain accountability for the safe handling, appropriate use, and preservation of department supplies, instruments, and equipment.
Perioperative Nursing Process
- Conduct comprehensive patient assessments, collecting and communicating all relevant intraoperative data.
- Develop individualized intraoperative care plans based on patient needs and surgical requirements.
- Provide direct patient care to support physical and psychological well‑being during surgery.
- Continuously evaluate patient responses and adjust the nursing care plan to achieve optimal outcomes.
Clinical Knowledge & Documentation
- Demonstrate strong theoretical and practical knowledge of perioperative nursing, understanding both the “how” and “why” of surgical practices.
- Ensure complete, accurate, and timely documentation of all intraoperative nursing care.
Patient Safety & Positioning
- Apply expertise in proper intraoperative positioning to prevent nerve injury, pressure‑related skin breakdown, and other complications.
- Follow universal skin care precautions to promote patient safety and comfort.
Surgical Counts & Preference Management
- Assist with accurate completion of sponge, sharps, instrument, and miscellaneous item counts per policy.
- Collaborate with Resource RNs and PCCs to maintain up‑to‑date surgeon preference sheets.
Critical Thinking & Time Management
- Display effective prioritization, critical‑thinking, and time‑management skills across all perioperative activities.
- Maintain precision in patient charging, cost‑effective supply usage, and transmission of required data for billing accuracy.
Turnover & Efficiency
- Contribute to efficient room turnover by being readily available and maintaining ongoing communication with the OR Desk, Charge RN, and PCCs.
- Assist with containment of body fluid spills, gross cleanup, and preparation of the operating room between procedures.
- Prioritize case completion and room setup steps to support smooth, timely surgical workflow.
Qualifications
- Strong clinical judgment, communication skills, and commitment to patient-centered care
- Prefer minimum of 1-year recent perioperative experience.
- Ability to lift up to 50 lbs.
Credentials
- RN - Registered Nurse
- BLS - Basic Life Saving certification
Education
- Graduate of an accredited nursing school
