Context
It is rare to find an infrastructure project immune to budget and political cycles, but this one has a career horizon stretching all the way to 2086. We are looking for a Communications Lead Engineer to join the Newcastle–Sydney HSR corridor—a 100% renewable, greenfield network that is setting a new global standard for engineering excellence.
Missions/Main Duties
In this role, you will be responsible for the digital backbone of the entire programme. You will lead the design of critical systems that keep the network connected, from the latest railway mobile communication standards (FRMCS) to emergency tunnel coverage, ensuring a future-proofed and operationally robust architecture.
Profile/Skills
Lead the design of all railway communications and telecommunications systems, including GSM-R / FRMCS, public address, passenger information, CCTV, SCADA, and OCC systems.
Develop the communications systems architecture for the HSR programme, covering network topology, equipment locations, and cable routing strategies.
Ensure the system architecture is future-proofed and interfaces seamlessly with signalling, traction power, and rolling stock.
Manage the design of in-tunnel communications coverage solutions, such as leaky feeders and radiating cables, to ensure compliant emergency service and passenger connectivity.
Lead interface management between communications systems and civil/tunnel infrastructure, defining equipment room requirements and environmental conditions.
Co-ordinate with the Tunnels Lead and Electrical Lead to ensure infrastructure is correctly allocated within the tunnel envelope.
Provide technical input into system specifications and tender documentation during the ECI phase.
Review contractor submissions and advise the Rail Systems Lead on technical compliance and interface compatibility.
Ensure the design meets all emergency management and life safety requirements, working closely with the Fire & Life Safety Lead.
If you are ready to put the "greenest thing possible" on your CV and lead a technical legacy that moves the needle for decades to come, we want to hear from you.
