Position Summary:

The Alumni Officer develops and implements strategies that strengthen lifelong relationships between Fort Lewis College and its alumni. Reporting to the Director of Engagement, this position builds meaningful connections with alumni through volunteer engagement, regional outreach, strategic partnerships, communications, and constituent experiences that foster pride, advocacy, participation, and philanthropy.

Working collaboratively with the Office for Advancement and campus partners, the Alumni Officer cultivates alumni involvement through programs, volunteer leadership, networking opportunities, and regional engagement initiatives that support the College's strategic priorities and philanthropic goals. This position serves as the primary relationship manager for alumni engagement efforts and works closely with the Experience Manager and the Annual Giving and Communications Coordinator to deliver coordinated engagement opportunities and communications throughout the alumni lifecycle.

Job Description:

Alumni Relationship Management and Engagement

  • Build and sustain meaningful relationships with Fort Lewis College alumni to strengthen lifelong engagement with the College.
  • Develop and implement engagement strategies that increase alumni participation through volunteerism, networking, mentorship, advocacy, philanthropy, and lifelong learning opportunities.
  • Serve as the primary relationship manager for assigned alumni constituencies, affinity groups, and regional alumni networks.
  • Conduct strategic outreach and travel to cultivate relationships with alumni and identify opportunities for increased engagement and philanthropic involvement.
  • Identify, recruit, and steward alumni volunteers who support Advancement initiatives and the mission of Fort Lewis College.

Volunteer and Affinity Engagement

  • Develop and manage alumni volunteer opportunities that strengthen alumni connections while supporting institutional priorities.
  • Partner with campus colleagues to expand alumni mentoring, career networking, student engagement, and volunteer initiatives.
  • Support affinity-based alumni communities, advisory groups, and volunteer leadership structures, including the Native American Alumni Chapter and future affinity groups.
  • Provide guidance and support to alumni volunteers to ensure meaningful and rewarding engagement experiences.
  • Recognize and celebrate volunteer contributions through coordinated stewardship and recognition efforts.

Alumni Programs and Partnerships

  • Collaborate with the Experience Manager to develop and execute alumni engagement opportunities locally, regionally, and virtually that strengthen alumni participation and connection.
  • Partner with campus departments including Career & Workforce Development, Admissions, Athletics, Academic Affairs, and student organizations to create meaningful opportunities for alumni involvement.
  • Build relationships with community organizations, employers, and regional partners that expand opportunities for alumni engagement and student success.
  • Represent Fort Lewis College at alumni, campus, and community events as an ambassador for the institution and the Office for Advancement.

Communications and Philanthropic Collaboration

  • Partner with the Annual Giving and Communications Coordinator to identify alumni stories, volunteer highlights, and engagement opportunities for print, digital, web, social media, and email communications.
  • Collaborate with Development Officers to identify alumni with philanthropic potential and facilitate relationship-building opportunities.
  • Support annual giving initiatives by encouraging alumni participation and promoting engagement opportunities that strengthen the donor pipeline.
  • Ensure alumni engagement activities complement donor stewardship, fundraising priorities, and institutional communications.

Planning, Assessment, and Administration

  • Assist in developing annual alumni engagement goals and operational plans aligned with the Office for Advancement strategic plan.
  • Utilize the alumni and donor database to document constituent interactions, volunteer activity, engagement participation, and relationship outcomes.
  • Develop targeted outreach lists and assist in segmenting alumni populations for engagement initiatives and communications.
  • Monitor participation metrics and prepare regular reports evaluating alumni engagement, volunteer activity, and program effectiveness, making recommendations for continuous improvement.
  • Assist with budget management for assigned alumni engagement initiatives and ensure compliance with College and Foundation policies.
  • Participate in cross-functional Advancement planning to ensure coordinated alumni engagement, annual giving, communications, stewardship, and constituent experiences.

Other

  • Demonstrates a commitment to diversity, equity, inclusion, and student success, as well as working with broadly diverse communities.
  • Maintains knowledge and awareness of digital accessibility, including the Americans with Disabilities Act and Section 508.
  • Produces and remediates digitally accessible materials in accordance with FLC standards.
  • Performs other duties as assigned, dependent upon the position's current portfolio of programs.
  • Ability to travel and drive with a valid driver's license.

Minimum Education, Specialized Skills and Experience

  • Bachelor's degree from an accredited college or university;
  • One or more year of experience working in a similar role related to marketing, development, sales, engagement, or higher education.
  • Demonstrated experience developing relationships and managing multiple projects simultaneously.

Preferred Education, Specialized Skills and Experience

  • Experience working in higher education or nonprofit advancement;
  • Demonstrated success building and sustaining volunteer programs and constituent relationships;
  • Experience planning and implementing engagement initiatives and regional outreach efforts;
  • Strong interpersonal, written, and verbal communication skills;
  • Experience utilizing constituent relationship management (CRM) systems to manage engagement activities and analyze results;
  • Proven ability to collaborate across departments and with diverse constituent groups;
  • Strong organizational and project management skills;
  • Experience using data and engagement metrics to evaluate program effectiveness and inform future strategy.

Reports To / Supervisory Responsibility:

This position reports to the Director of Engagement.

Travel

Travel is required up to 50% of the time in this role including travel for regional and national engagement, as well as conference travel as deemed appropriate. Weekend and evening obligations are also required.

  • Typical Work hours are 8am to 5pm Mountain Time Monday to Friday, with evening and weekend work based on event schedules. Schedules will be determined in collaboration with the Director of Engagement.

Compensation

The salary range is $50,000 to $55,500 , plus a comprehensive benefits package.
