Description

Mechanical Staff Engineer

East Kilbride, Scotland (Onsite/Hybrid)

Your Impact

As a Mechanical Staff Engineer, you will provide senior technical leadership in the development of advanced monitoring, protection, recording, and analytics solutions used throughout electrical power generation, transmission, and distribution networks.

You will be a recognised technical expert responsible for delivering innovative mechanical design solutions across new product development, sustaining engineering, and platform enhancement initiatives. Working closely with Hardware, Firmware, Systems, Manufacturing, Quality, Supply Chain, and Product Management teams, you will lead the resolution of complex engineering challenges and ensure products meet the highest standards of performance, reliability, manufacturability, safety, and cost-effectiveness.

This role combines hands-on engineering expertise with technical leadership, requiring deep knowledge of product design, industrialisation, compliance, and lifecycle management while mentoring and developing other engineers across the organisation.

Here's where you'll demonstrate your proficiencies:

  • Lead the mechanical design and development of complex embedded monitoring, sensing, recording, and industrial instrumentation products.
  • Translate product and system requirements into robust mechanical solutions that meet performance, environmental, regulatory, manufacturing, reliability, and cost objectives.
  • Design and review enclosures, assemblies, thermal management solutions, mounting systems, cable management, and industrial packaging components.
  • Drive mechanical architecture implementation and subsystem design for complex products and product platforms.
  • Perform engineering analysis including thermal, structural, vibration, shock, environmental, and tolerance studies to ensure product robustness.
  • Lead technical investigations, root cause analysis, corrective actions, and failure analysis for development, manufacturing, and field issues.
  • Evaluate design trade-offs involving performance, reliability, manufacturability, serviceability, sustainability, product lifecycle, and commercial considerations.
  • Support prototype development, testing, environmental qualification, production launch, and product validation activities.
  • Drive Design for Manufacture (DFM), Design for Assembly (DFA), Design for Serviceability (DFS), and Design for Cost initiatives.
  • Lead technical design reviews and contribute to engineering standards, governance processes, and best practices.
  • Support supplier engagement, component qualification, value engineering, and obsolescence management activities.
  • Identify technical risks early, develop mitigation strategies, and provide leadership through complex product development challenges.
  • Mentor engineers and promote engineering excellence through technical coaching, standards development, and knowledge sharing.
  • * *

Qualifications

The successful candidate will be able to demonstrate the following skills and experience:

  • Bachelor's or Master's Degree in Mechanical Engineering, Product Design Engineering, Manufacturing Engineering, or a related discipline.
  • Experience developing industrial, electronic, or embedded hardware products from concept through production and lifecycle support.
  • Proven experience designing complex mechanical systems, enclosures, assemblies, and industrial products.
  • Strong understanding of materials, manufacturing processes, tolerance analysis, environmental protection, thermal management, and reliability engineering.
  • Experience with sheet metal, machined components, castings, injection mouldings, seals, gaskets, fasteners, and assembly design.
  • Demonstrated ability to lead complex technical investigations and make sound engineering decisions within multidisciplinary teams.
  • Experience supporting product validation, environmental qualification, certification, and regulatory compliance activities.
  • Strong communication, collaboration, technical leadership, and stakeholder management skills.
  • Proven ability to influence technical direction and mentor engineers without direct line management responsibility.
  • * *

Preferred Skills

  • Experience developing products for electrical utility, industrial automation, energy, transportation, or critical infrastructure sectors.
  • Experience with thermal management design for embedded electronic systems.
  • Strong understanding of environmental qualification standards including vibration, shock, ingress protection, temperature, humidity, and corrosion requirements.
  • Familiarity with IEC, IEEE, UL, CE, and other relevant industrial product standards.
  • Experience supporting EMC compliance activities from a mechanical design perspective.
  • Expertise in 3D CAD systems such as SolidWorks, Creo, Inventor, or equivalent.
  • Experience performing simulation and analysis including Finite Element Analysis (FEA), Computational Fluid Dynamics (CFD), and tolerance modelling.
  • Understanding of manufacturing processes including machining, fabrication, casting, moulding, finishing, and assembly operations.
  • Experience supporting global supply chains, supplier development, component qualification, and product lifecycle management.
  • Familiarity with PLM, change control, configuration management, and engineering release processes.
  • * *

Leadership Expectations

In this role you will be recognised as a senior technical contributor and mechanical engineering subject matter expert within the organisation.

You will be expected to:

  • Provide technical leadership across multiple projects, products, and engineering initiatives.
  • Serve as a recognised authority for complex mechanical design, analysis, qualification, and problem-solving activities.
  • Collaborate effectively with Systems, Hardware, Firmware, Software, Manufacturing, Quality, and Supply Chain teams to deliver integrated product solutions.
  • Drive engineering excellence through technical reviews, development standards, mentoring, and best practices.
  • Contribute to technology roadmaps and innovation initiatives through deep technical expertise and industry knowledge.
  • Coach and develop engineers while fostering a culture of continuous learning and engineering excellence.
  • Champion product quality, reliability, manufacturability, safety, sustainability, and customer value throughout the product lifecycle.
  • Lead by example through strong technical judgement, accountability, collaboration, and continuous improvement.
