Maintenance Technician

Description

SUMMARY:

Reports equipment conditions and maintains, repairs, and installs machinery and mechanical equipment, including engines, motors, pneumatic tools, presses, mills, and other production machinery. Troubleshoot existing low- and high-voltage electrical systems; repairs or replaces components; and installs new systems. Constructs wooden, metal, and other structures, devices, and tooling for production or other uses. Machines components according to design specifications and fabricate structures, tooling, and other devices through welding, brazing, and similar methods. Operates and maintains boilers and feedwater quality, as well as a package sewage-treatment system, in accordance with applicable state environmental and health regulations.

The foregoing is accomplished by performing the following duties:

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

The following duties are representative of this position. Other duties may be assigned.

Observes mechanical devices in operation and listens to their sounds to locate causes of trouble.

Dismantle devices to gain access to and remove defective parts.

Examine form and texture of parts to detect imperfections.

Inspect used parts to determine changes in dimensional requirements.

Adjusts functional parts of devices and control instruments.

Repairs or replaces defective parts; installs specialized functional and structural components; and lubricates and cleans parts.

Start devices to test their performance.

Set up and operates lathes, drill presses, grinders, MIG and stick welding equipment, brazing and cutting torches, and other metalworking tools to make and repair parts.

Operate boilers and maintains feedwater quality.

Operate a package sewage-treatment system.

Install and repair electrical systems, apparatus, and electrical and electronic components of industrial machinery and equipment by performing the following duties:

· Install power-supply wiring and conduit for newly installed machines and equipment, including programmable controllers.

· Connect power-supply wiring to machines and equipment and installs interconnecting cables.

· Diagnose malfunctioning apparatus, including transformers, motors, and lighting fixtures, and replaces damaged or broken lamps, ballasts, wires, and cables.

· Test malfunctioning machinery and consult with other maintenance personnel to identify the cause of the malfunction.

· Replace faulty electrical components, including relays, switches, motors, and positions sensing devices.

· Diagnose, repair, or replace faulty electronic components, including printed circuit boards.

· Replace electric motor bearings and rewires motors.

· Use programmable-controller controls to program and operate automated machinery, test for malfunctions, and verify repairs.

· Plan wiring layouts and install wiring, conduit, and electrical apparatus inside and outside buildings.

· Diagnose and replace faulty mechanical, hydraulic, and pneumatic components of machinery, equipment, and supply systems.

Constructs and repairs structural woodwork and equipment by performing the following duties:

· Build, repair, and install counters, cabinets, benches, partitions, floors, doors, building framework, and trim.

· Install glass in windows, doors, and partitions.

· Replace damaged ceiling tile, floor tile, and wall coverings.

· Build cabinets and other wooden equipment in the carpentry shop.

· Perform detailed calibrations on measuring devices, including gauges, scales, and related equipment or components.

EDUCATION AND/OR EXPERIENCE:

High school diploma or equivalent; vocational education in electrical/electronic; and three to five years of related experience and/or training with 0- to 480-volt AC/DC systems; or an equivalent combination of education and experience.

LANGUAGE SKILLS:

Ability to read and interpret safety rules, operating and maintenance instructions, and procedure manuals; write routine reports and correspondence; and communicate effectively with groups of customers or employees.

MATHEMATICAL SKILLS:

Ability to work with mathematical concepts such as probability and statistical inference, and fundamentals of plane and solid geometry and trigonometry. Ability to apply concepts such as fractions, percentages, ratios, and proportions to practical situations.

REASONING ABILITY:

Ability to solve practical problems involving a variety of concrete variables in situations where only limited standardization exists, and to interpret instructions provided in written, oral, diagram, or schedule form.

CERTIFICATES, LICENSES, AND REGULATORY REQUIREMENTS:

Valid state-issued motor vehicle operator’s license. (West Virginia does not require a commercial driver’s license for vehicles weighing less than 8,000 pounds GVW.) A West Virginia journeyman electrician’s license; three to five years of related experience with 0- to 480-volt AC/DC systems; and/or basic and advanced vocational training in electrical/electronics.

OTHER SKILLS AND ABILITIES:

Operates motorized industrial vehicles, including lift trucks, utility vehicles, powered lift platforms, four-wheel-drive tractors, and related vehicles.

The employee must regularly lift or move up to 25 pounds, frequently lift or move up to 50 pounds, and occasionally lift or move up to 100 pounds. Required vision abilities include close, distance, color, and peripheral vision; depth perception; and the ability to adjust focus.

While performing the duties of this job, the employee frequently works near moving mechanical parts and is frequently exposed to fumes or airborne particles and the risk of electrical shock. The employee occasionally works in high or precarious places and outdoors, and may be exposed to wet or humid conditions, toxic or caustic chemicals, extreme heat, and vibration.

The noise level in the work environment is usually moderate.
