Concrete Finisher (Mason II)

This is a skilled position in concrete and/or brick laying work using the tools and equipment specific to the trade, as well as the operation of various types of heavy equipment and the driving of vehicles within the department.  Qualified individuals will be able to perform such tasks as building forms and setting them for curbs, gutters, sidewalks, etc., and finishing concrete, as well as installing and repairing walls, walkways, etc. which require the laying of brick or block in intricate or aesthetic patterns.

All duties may not be found for each position, nor does the list necessarily include all tasks which may be assigned. 

Employees will receive specific, and sometimes detailed instructions for the method, progress, and completion of assignments.  Inspections may take place during all phases of the project.  Proper upkeep of the tools, supplies, and equipment used in various concrete projects will be expected, for both functionality and safety.

• Performs rough carpentry work, such as building concrete forms, wooden fences, or other items needed in connection with the construction and maintenance of water, sewer, utilities, sidewalks, curbs, gutters, drains, bridges, and buildings.
• Performs rough sign and other painting work, brush or spray, not involving difficult lettering.
• Repairs, fabricates, and erects metal and wooden street signs
• Lays out and paints center lines and lane lines in streets, crosswalks and parking spaces
• Operates light trucks and other related automotive equipment
• Operates light saws, cuts and fells trees and branches, observing precautions against personal injury or property damage
• Performs miscellaneous mechanical and maintenance repair tasks requiring familiarity with basic trade practices of carpentry, painting, masonry, plumbing or similar operations
• Drives trucks hauling various materials from one location to another
• Services equipment and makes minor field repairs and adjustments.  Reports the need for major repairs to equipment, following department procedures.
• Supervises, as requested, and performs manual labor in loading, unloading, or other related work as required.
• Operates small trenching equipment
• Operates a heavy type of tractor-trailer in hauling heavy machines and construction equipment.
• Operators a motor patrol in digging ditches, grading shoulders, shaping back slopes, shaping driveways, mixing base course, spreading gravel, and other rough grading
• Operates a bulldozer in clearing, grubbing, backfilling, and performing grading or moving work
• Operates a tractor and scraper doing earth moving and rough grading; operates a tractor pulling rollers or disc plow
• Operates a backhoe, trencher, side boom or forklift for general job assignments
• Operates either a front or rear end distributor, asphalt spreader, sand spreader, or roller and a variety of other loaders
• Operates truck with front end loader; Loads rock, gravel, sand and stumps on trucks; Digs trenches; Fills holes with appropriate materials
• Performs related work as required
• Any other task deemed necessary by the immediate supervisor

• Must have and maintain a Class A or B CDL

• Ability to follow verbal and written directions
• Common sense to recognize unforeseen safety hazards, operational problems, and work site dangers.
• Must be able to form and finish various types of concrete/cement for multiple types of projects and/or lay bricks for forming walls, walkways, stairs or substructures.
• Mandatory to work overtime and/or alternating shifts, including weekends and holidays, as required

Physical Requirements:

• Ability to maneuver various sized vehicles
• Eyesight sufficient to pass a test for a commercial driver's license and perform required duties.
• Physical strength and endurance to perform heavy manual labor, sometimes in adverse weather conditions
• Ability to walk on uneven or rough terrain, rocky or sandy soil, in wet or slippery conditions
• Ability to enter manholes and work in close and enclosed areas
• Bending, stooping, and heavy lifting are required in this position
• Must be able to work around motorized equipment, trimmers, chainsaws, air compressors, welders, etc.
• Ability to handle moderate to extreme weather conditions (temperatures, rain, etc.)
• Position is subject to random drug testing.
