Job Description

Motorola Solutions is seeking a Director of State and Local Government Affairs to lead legislative, regulatory, and public policy advocacy across the East Region. Reporting to the Senior Director of State and Local Government Affairs, this role acts as an aggressive field leader driving policy outcomes across state capitols and city halls. The ideal candidate will shape public policy to unlock commercial opportunities, navigating state legislatures, municipal bodies, and executive agencies while working collaboratively with the Federal Affairs team to ensure seamless alignment between regional initiatives and national policy goals.

Key Responsibilities

  • Strategic Planning and Execution: Develop and implement a comprehensive government affairs strategy aligned with Motorola Solutions' business objectives, including proactive and reactive engagement with state and local legislative and regulatory bodies.  Identify emerging policy trends and develop proactive strategies to position the company for success.

  • Commercial Alignment & Pipeline Growth: Collaborate directly with Regional Sales Directors, Account Executives, and Territory Leadership to integrate policy advocacy into sales strategies—proactively eliminating political and legislative friction to secure high-value public procurements.

  • Public Funding Capture: Track and operationalize federal, state, and local funding streams to create purchasing vehicles for Motorola Solutions’ technology portfolio.

  • Federal Affairs Collaboration: Partner closely with the Federal Affairs team to share regional political intelligence, align congressional advocacy with state-level priorities, and ensure state/local policy strategies reinforce national enterprise objectives.

  • Consultant & PAC Oversight: Direct a network of state-level contract lobbyists across assigned states. Manage political budgets and PAC allocations in strict compliance with federal, state, and local ethics and lobbying disclosure laws.

  • Coalition & Association Leadership: Represent the company within regional trade associations, political organizations (e.g., NCSL, CSG, RGA, DGA), and public safety groups to build strategic alliances and elevate brand presence.

Specific Knowledge & Skills

  • Bachelor’s Degree required.

  • 7-10+ years of progressive experience in state and local government affairs, legislative advocacy, public policy, or commercial corporate advocacy within state capitols and city halls.

  • Established network of relationships with key policymakers and influencers in relevant state capitals.

  • Deep understanding of the state legislative processes, municipal budget/procurement lifecycles, and public funding mechanisms, paired with familiarity in federal advocacy alignment.

  • Experience in the technology industry, particularly in the areas of communications, public safety, or cybersecurity, is highly desirable.

  • Demonstrated record of managing external contract lobbyists and collaborating with commercial sales teams; strong political judgment, ethics, and written/verbal communication skills.

  • Location: Residence in a major metropolitan area in the East region, near a major airport is preferred.

Target Base Salary Range: $170,000 - $190,000 USD

Consistent with Motorola Solutions values and applicable law, we provide the following information to promote pay transparency and equity. Pay within this range varies and depends on job-related knowledge, skills, and experience. The actual offer will be based on the individual candidate.
