Job Description Summary:

Under the direction of a Radiation Oncologist and the supervision of a Medical Physicist, the Dosimetrist develops, calculates, evaluates, and documents individualized radiation treatment plans that support safe, accurate, high-quality patient care. The role integrates clinical judgment, treatment-planning technology, quality assurance, interdisciplinary collaboration, and regulatory requirements to translate the prescribed course of radiation therapy into an executable treatment plan.

Job Specifications:

Education

• Completion of a formal medical dosimetry education/training pathway that meets eligibility requirements established by the Medical Dosimetry Certification Board (MDCB), or an equivalent pathway accepted by the MDCB.

Experience

• Three (3) or more years of medical dosimetry experience in a progressive radiation oncology setting.

Licenses & Certifications

• Medical Dosimetry Cert BOA (MDCB) required at hire
• Integrative Agitation Management (IAMTAC), required within 30 days of hire
• American Register of Rad Techs (ARRT) preferred.
• Applicable California licensure/certification preferred, where relevant to the individual's professional pathway and scope of practice.

Prerequisite Skills

• Demonstrated knowledge of medical dosimetry principles, radiation physics, anatomy, physiology, treatment-planning concepts, dose calculation, data analysis, and quality-control practices.
• Ability to develop and critically evaluate treatment plans for clinical appropriateness, accuracy, deliverability, and alignment with the Radiation Oncologist's prescription and Medical Physicist guidance.
• Ability to accurately interpret and follow written and verbal clinical instructions, policies, procedures, and treatment-planning protocols.
• Working knowledge of CT/MRI-based treatment planning, image reconstruction, target and normal-tissue anatomy, beam arrangement, dose distribution, and advanced treatment-planning techniques.
• Ability to identify discrepancies, technical concerns, or potential safety issues and escalate them promptly to the Radiation Oncologist, Medical Physicist, or appropriate clinical leader.
• Strong organization, prioritization, analytical thinking, attention to detail, and ability to manage multiple treatment-planning priorities within required timelines.
• Clear, professional communication and effective collaboration with physicians, physicists, radiation therapists, nursing staff, and other members of the interdisciplinary care team.
• Ability to use treatment-planning systems, oncology information systems, quality-assurance tools, and other department technology accurately and efficiently.
• Commitment to maintaining current knowledge of evolving dosimetry practices, technology, evidence-based standards, and radiation safety requirements.

Duties And Responsibilities:

Essential Duties (Not Modifiable)

• Develops individualized radiation treatment plans in accordance with the Radiation Oncologist's prescription, departmental standards, and Medical Physicist guidance; completes required calculations and documentation accurately and within established treatment timelines.
• Performs and verifies dosimetry calculations, including treatment time, point dose, monitor units, gap calculations, tissue inhomogeneity corrections, and other calculations required for safe treatment delivery.
• Creates and evaluates clinically appropriate dose distributions and treatment plans, including coplanar and non-coplanar beam arrangements, 3D conformal planning, intensity-modulated radiation therapy (IMRT), and other department-supported techniques.
• Reconstructs and evaluates patient anatomy from CT/MRI and other available imaging to support treatment planning, including development of patient models and review of target and normal-tissue structures as clinically appropriate.
• Reviews treatment plans for accuracy, clinical intent, technical feasibility, dose constraints, and completeness before treatment; promptly resolves or escalates discrepancies before treatment delivery.
• Performs dosimetric measurements and other quality-assurance activities associated with treatment plans and treatment-planning systems; documents result according to department standards.
• Develops pre-simulation or planning support as requested by the Medical Physicist and/or Radiation Oncologist.
• Coordinates with Radiation Oncologists, Medical Physicists, radiation therapists, and other clinical team members to support timely simulation, planning, verification, and treatment delivery.
• Provides clinical consultation to physicians, physicists, and radiation therapists regarding dosimetry, treatment-planning considerations, and plan implementation within the scope of the role.
• Performs quality control of treatment devices and planning-related materials within assigned scope and ensures identified concerns are corrected or escalated before clinical use.
• Completes charge capture/billing documentation for dosimetry and treatment-device procedures accurately and timely, consistent with department processes.
• Maintains complete, accurate, and audit-ready treatment-planning and quality-assurance documentation in applicable systems.
• Supports staff education, orientation, and in-service training related to dosimetry processes, technology, safety, and workflow as assigned.
• Participates in departmental quality improvement, safety initiatives, peer review, process improvement, and implementation of new treatment-planning technologies or workflows.
• Maintains competency with current treatment-planning practices and completes required education, competencies, and regulatory training.

The posted pay range complies with applicable law and reflects what we reasonably expect to pay for this role. Individual pay is set by skills, experience, qualifications, and internal/market equity, consistent with MarinHealth’s compensation philosophy. Positions covered by collective bargaining agreements are governed by those agreements.
