Position Purpose

The Application Engineer is responsible for developing net-new solutions and refactoring prototype applications into secure, reliable tools that drive business profitability, increased efficiencies, and improved customer experience. While a major focus of this role is hardening AI-assisted prototypes for broader, ongoing use, you will also occasionally design and build new applications from the ground up to advance The Home Depot's analytics capabilities. Based on the specific needs of the team, this role requires proficiency in application engineering specializations such as secure coding, API and Model Context Protocol (MCP) integrations, testing and quality assurance, and data pipeline integration.

As an Application Engineer, you will collaborate with data engineers, analysts, data scientists, and business partners to architect new tools and productionalize existing prototypes. You will manage integration points for AI agent interactions, proactively balance workload and priorities within the team, and consistently communicate progress. These responsibilities require effective communication skills, relationship-building across technical and business partners, and the engineering proficiency to deliver solutions the organization can completely rely on.

Key Responsibilities:

• 60% Solution Development - Develop, test, deploy, and maintain data pipelines and products; Maintain established data architectural standards and ETL/ELT best practices consistent with a cloud-based data store in an analytic use case. Consistently helps the team achieve results even under tough circumstances.
• 20% Collaboration - Interface with analysts, data scientists, product managers, business leaders, and others in IT to discuss the design, implementation, and testing of data pipelines and products. Actively engage in the Agile delivery process and participate in improvement conversations.
• 20% Technical Exploration & Development - Learn through successful and failed experimentation when tackling new problems; Actively seek ways to grow and be challenged using both formal and informal development channels (including self-development).

Travel Requirements: 

• Typically requires overnight travel less than 5% of the time.

Physical Requirements:  

• Most of the time is spent sitting in a comfortable position and there is frequent opportunity to move about. On rare occasions, there may be a need to move or lift light articles.

Working Conditions: 

• Located in a comfortable indoor area. Any unpleasant conditions would be infrequent and not objectionable.

Minimum Qualifications: 

• Must be eighteen years of age or older.
• Must be legally permitted to work in the United States.

Preferred Qualifications:

• Bachelor's or Master's degree in Computer Science, Engineering, or a related technical field
• 4+ years of experience in application engineering, software development, or data engineering
• Proficiency in a modern programming language (preferably Python)
• Proficiency running queries against enterprise data (preferably with Google BigQuery or SQL)
• Experience designing, building, and deploying net-new applications from the ground up
• Experience refactoring, hardening, or modernizing existing codebases—specifically code built rapidly or with AI generation tools
• Experience building APIs and integrating with Model Context Protocols (MCPs) to enable AI agent interactions
• Experience building or integrating data pipelines that feed downstream applications
• Familiarity with cloud-hosted environments, modern CI/CD deployment practices, and building applications that meet platform team deployment standards
• Experience with security frameworks for user and data authorization and authentication
• Experience leading quality assurance efforts by creating and executing unit, functional, and regression tests
• Comfortable communicating technical trade-offs, project progress, and workload prioritization to both technical and non-technical business partners
