Job Description & Core Responsibilities
Reports To: General Manager
Location: Quail Mountain Market, Clear Lake, California 95422
FLSA Status: Exempt
Employment Status: Full-Time
Compensation Range: $37,500 – $42,000 Annually (DOE) | Benefits Eligible
Position Summary
The Assistant Manager supports the General Manager in overseeing the daily operations of the travel center, including retail, fuel, food service, customer service, staffing, inventory, safety, and facility cleanliness. This position leads employees during assigned shifts and helps ensure the location operates safely, efficiently, and profitably.
Core Duties and Responsibilities
- Provide friendly, professional service to customers, drivers, vendors, and team members.
- Assist with the daily operation of the travel center, convenience store, fuel area, restaurant, and other service areas.
- Supervise, train, coach, schedule, and motivate employees.
- Assign duties and monitor employee performance throughout each shift.
- Open and close the location according to company procedures.
- Ensure adequate staffing and assist with shift coverage when needed.
- Operate cash registers and point-of-sale systems.
- Perform cash counts, safe drops, register audits, deposits, and shift reconciliation.
- Investigate and report cash shortages, overages, voids, refunds, and other transaction discrepancies.
- Monitor sales, labor, expenses, waste, and inventory to help meet performance goals.
- Receive, inspect, price, rotate, stock, and display merchandise.
- Place orders and help maintain appropriate inventory levels.
- Complete inventory counts and investigate product shortages or discrepancies.
- Reduce product loss by following cash-handling, food-control, and loss-prevention procedures.
- Monitor fuel pumps and assist customers with fuel-related transactions or concerns.
- Ensure shelves, coolers, displays, counters, restrooms, parking areas, fuel islands, dining areas, and food-service areas remain clean and organized.
- Support restaurant operations, including food preparation, service, sanitation, and temperature monitoring.
- Ensure food is prepared, stored, labeled, rotated, and served according to food-safety requirements.
- Respond promptly and professionally to customer questions, complaints, and service issues.
- Enforce company policies, operating procedures, dress standards, and attendance expectations.
- Maintain compliance with health, safety, sanitation, environmental, tobacco, alcohol, lottery, and fuel regulations.
- Verify identification for age-restricted purchases.
- Complete required shift reports, incident reports, maintenance requests, and employee documentation.
- Report equipment problems, safety hazards, spills, injuries, theft, suspicious activity, and emergencies.
- Follow emergency procedures and assist with accident or incident response.
- Communicate operational concerns and employee matters to the General Manager.
- Help recruit, interview, onboard, and evaluate employees as assigned.
- Perform the General Manager's duties when the General Manager is unavailable.
- Perform cashiering, stocking, cleaning, food preparation, and other frontline duties when business needs require.
- Complete other duties as assigned.

Education and Experience
- High school diploma or equivalent preferred.
- Previous retail, convenience store, restaurant, hospitality, fuel-center, or supervisory experience preferred.
- Cash-handling and customer-service experience preferred.
Required Knowledge, Skills & Abilities
- Strong leadership, communication, organization, and problem-solving skills.
- Ability to remain professional and make sound decisions in a fast-paced environment.
- Basic math, computer, and point-of-sale skills.
- Ability to obtain any required food-handler, alcohol-sales, tobacco-sales, or other certifications.
- Must meet applicable age requirements for selling restricted products.
- Dependable transportation and reliable attendance are required.
- Must be able to work a flexible schedule.
Preferred Certifications
- California Food Handler Card
- ABC LEAD (Licensee Education on Alcohol and Drugs) training, voluntary but recommended for employees who sell alcohol or tobacco at an off-sale location.

Requirements include the ability to stand and walk for extended periods, frequently lift and carry items up to 40 pounds, bend, stoop, and reach overhead, operate a computer and point-of-sale equipment, and work in outdoor fuel station conditions. Specific vision requirements include close vision and the ability to adjust focus for computer and register operation.
