Our Inpatient Unit on the Mitchell Campus in Cheektowaga, NY, provides a relaxing home-like setting for select patients and their families. Our unique unit is only offered to patients whose pain or symptoms cannot be managed at home or are approaching their final stage. Hospice patients can also be admitted to the unit for short-term respite care.
This position is responsible for the day to day clinical coordination of patient care in the freestanding Hospice Inpatient Unit (HIU). The Charge RN provides leadership and direction to the clinical staff for their designated shift in collaboration with HIU management to promote high quality, safe patient care as well as timely and seamless transfer in and out of the HIU. Serves as staff liaison to the Hospice Inpatient Unit providers and management.
Essential Duties and Responsibilities for a Charge Registered Nurse:
Must be knowledgeable about state and federal hospice regulations as they apply to the HIU and other functions such as transfers in and out of HIU.
As a leader on their shift, sets the tone for staff by demonstrating a consistently positive attitude and proactive problem solving.
Keeps managers informed of concerns from staff on their designated shift and participates in collaborative problem solving to promote teamwork and job satisfaction.
Must be able to competently perform all functions of the HIU RN including carrying a patient assignment, admissions, transfers, and discharges inclusive of all documentation requirements.
Responsible for managing patient assignments on the designated shift, considering staffing and patient acuity to promote high quality, safe patient care.
Acts as first responder on their shift relative to any patient, family, visitor complaint or care concern and keeps management informed as issues arise.
In collaboration with HIU managers, manages the staffing call off protocol to maintain appropriate staffing relative to census.
Continually mentors newly hired and existing staff and participates in the onboarding of new HIU staff.
Participates in quality improvement initiatives and chart reviews to assist management with identifying opportunities for improvement as it relates to patient care or departmental processes.
Assists HIU managers with staff scheduling, coaching and corrective actions as appropriate.
Works primarily Monday through Friday with a holiday rotation with expectation to flex to weekend shifts periodically to assist with coverage as needed.
Qualifications for a Charge Registered Nurse:
Education/Certification
Graduate of an accredited school of nursing with current RN licensure in the State of New York.
Certification in Hospice and Palliative Care Nursing preferred.
Certification in hospice and palliative care (CHPN) encouraged.
Experience
Minimum of (2) Years of nursing practice as a professional nurse is required.
Hospice or palliative care experience helpful.
Charge Nurse experience in a facility setting helpful.
