DEPARTMENT/SCHOOL/COLLEGE: Department of Psychology/School of Behavioral and Cognitive Sciences/College of Humanities and Social Sciences/School

POSITION DESCRIPTION: 

The Department of Psychology at Montclair State University invites applications for a full-time, 10-month, non-tenure track, Assistant Teaching Professor position in Health Psychology, beginning in August 2027. We seek a dynamic and collaborative colleague whose expertise in Health Psychology will contribute to a coordinated departmental initiative to expand Health Psychology across undergraduate, graduate, and online programs. This position represents an exciting opportunity to join one of the largest psychology departments in the region and to play a central role in building a distinctive Health Psychology presence that integrates research, education, and community impact.

The successful candidate will teach undergraduate and graduate courses in Health Psychology and related areas and will serve as a key contributor to the development, assessment, and improvement of Health Psychology curricula and programs. The position offers opportunities to collaborate with faculty on innovative instructional initiatives, experiential learning opportunities, and community partnerships that enhance student success and career readiness.

The position is a two-year, ten-month, non-tenure track (NTT) appointment, with eligibility for reappointment based on established NTT procedures. Montclair is committed to the success of teaching faculty through opportunities for promotion and professional development to support long-term success and flourishing at the University. 

Teaching Faculty members are expected to contribute to the University's mission through excellence in teaching and service.

Teaching: The standard annual teaching load for 10-month teaching faculty is 12 teaching credit hours (TCH) a semester, with an additional 6 TCH in the summer for 12-month faculty.  Additional TCH reassigned time (course release) is available for faculty with additional responsibilities such as administering programs. Teaching Faculty are expected to center student success and measurable learning outcomes through clear course design, inclusive pedagogies, and the integration of emerging disciplinary and pedagogical developments. Responsibilities include classroom instruction, student mentoring and advising, and developing and updating courses and curricula aligned with student demands and institutional strategic priorities.

Service: Teaching Faculty members are expected to perform valuable service to the department, college/school, university. This includes participating in shared governance, academic program vitality, and sharing professional expertise within and beyond the University. Service activities are separate and distinct from the specific assignments for which teaching faculty members receive course release.

DEPARTMENT OF PSYCHOLOGY

The Psychology Department—organized into the three broad categories of clinical, industrial/organizational (I/O), and psychological science—serves a large and diverse constituency of students, and comprises a vibrant group of 35 full-time faculty, in addition to several emeriti faculty and support staff. The Department continues to expand its national profile, with 20 active research labs, over 3.5 million dollars in extramural funding, and PhD programs in both clinical and I/O psychology—in addition to popular MA and certification programs in clinical psychology, I/O psychology, psychological science, and advanced quantitative methods. The research interests of our faculty include neuroscience, neurodegenerative diseases, and neurocognitive aging; cognitive processes such as memory, the brain reward system, decision-making, perceptual processing, and spatial cognition; internalizing psychological disorders and trauma; forensic investigation, plea bargaining, and forensic and correctional assessment and treatment; language and life span development; motivation; pedagogy; effective leadership, mentorship, and supervision; organizational behavior; employee well-being, aging, and longevity; emotions and ethics in the workplace; and social attitudes, discrimination, diversity science, and social justice.

COLLEGE OF HUMANITIES AND SOCIAL SCIENCES

The College of Humanities and Social Sciences (CHSS) is Montclair State’s largest college, with over 5,000 undergraduate, master’s, and doctoral students. CHSS facilitates traditional and interdisciplinary learning and is the professional home of many outstanding scholars and instructors across numerous disciplines, all of whom lend to CHSS’s mission to furnish academically rigorous and relevant programs of study that contribute to the development of an informed and engaged civil society. CHSS’s programs develop in students the abilities to discover, create, evaluate, apply, and share knowledge, so that they will be able to think critically, act ethically, and be informed citizen-participants prepared to assume leadership roles in their communities. CHSS also aims to be responsive to the needs of society, including via its championing of use-inspired research collaboratively undertaken by faculty and students, and graduate programs that train students to apply knowledge in constructive, inspiring, and practical ways that benefit our local and broader communities.

QUALIFICATIONS

REQUIRED:

  • Earned PhD in Psychology

  • Demonstrated excellence in teaching all students.

  • A record that demonstrates interest and commitment to service.

PREFERRED:

  • Preferred candidates will have a PhD in health psychology or a closely related subfield, with demonstrated excellence in teaching. We are open to subareas of specialization, and welcome candidates whose work addresses contemporary challenges in health and well-being, including behavioral health, chronic disease management, health equity, prevention science, aging, stress and resilience, digital health, and social determinants of health. Consideration will also be given to candidates who complement existing Department strengths in clinical psychology and I/O psychology.

Salary Range

$89,209.75-$95,821.86 Annually
