About Hy-Vee

At Hy-Vee, we believe the shortest distance between two people is a smile. We're seeking people with a passion for customer service, a willingness to learn, and a commitment to being part of a team that strives to make our customers' lives easier, healthier and happier.

The Role and Why It's Important

Our Self-Checkout Clerks play a key role in keeping the front end of the store running smoothly by guiding customers through the self-checkout experience and stepping in whenever a helping hand is needed. In this role, you'll combine friendly customer service with a solid understanding of register operations to make checkout quick, easy, and enjoyable for every customer.

If you enjoy working with people, stay calm under pressure, and take pride in delivering a great experience, we'd love to have you on our team.

What You'll Do

No two shifts are exactly the same, but here's what you can expect:

  • Provide prompt, friendly customer service by greeting customers with a smile, learning their names, and making every interaction a positive one

  • Assist customers at self-checkout lanes, educating them on how to use the equipment and ensuring their orders are processed accurately and efficiently

  • Perform product scanning and order processing with occasional bagging and ensure proper handling of all forms of tender and coupons

  • Operate the cash register accurately when needed and process all payment types including cash, checks, credit cards, coupons, food stamps, WIC checks, rain checks, in-store charges, and lottery transactions

  • Count back change, issue receipts, and provide cash refunds or credit memorandums for returned merchandise as needed

  • Ensure compliance with local, state, and federal guidelines regarding WIC, food stamps, and the sale of tobacco, liquor, and lottery tickets

  • Assist courtesy personnel and support drive-up and carry-out service as needed

  • Stay knowledgeable of item look-up numbers, department numbers, item features, and weekly ad price changes and sale items

  • Stock, face, and rotate merchandise, clean shelves, understand shelf tags, and take customers to items when requested

  • Keep the register and self-checkout area clean, ensure adequate supplies are available, and report improper cash levels in the cash drawer

  • Verify register balances at the beginning and end of each shift where applicable

  • Communicate clearly on the intercom or telephone and answer customer questions, following up with appropriate personnel as needed

  • Stay aware of your surroundings to support store safety and security

  • Assist store management with displays and decorations for special promotions and events as needed

  • Assist in other areas of the store as needed and take on special projects as assigned

  • Maintain strict adherence to personal hygiene, dress standards, and all Hy-Vee policies and store guidelines

  • Report to work when scheduled and on time

Your Skills

To be successful, you'll need to be able to:

  • Follow detailed written or verbal instructions and work through tasks with a few concrete variables

  • Perform arithmetic calculations involving fractions, decimals, and percentages

  • Understand and follow verbal or demonstrated directions and communicate supply needs orally or in writing

  • Work effectively as part of a team to deliver a great customer experience
