Description

The purpose of this position is to provide administrative and technical support related to the operation of permits issued by the Building department.  This is accomplished by processing building construction permit applications, processing and tracking all construction projects and tenant improvements.Processes permit applications by checking for completeness, accuracy and compliance with Federal, State and City requirements; routes to appropriate departments/staff. Enters permits into the computer system, calculates fees and issues approved permits following established guidelines.

Performs accounting functions that may include: receiving payments, preparing deposits, managing petty cash, and forwarding invoices to accounting for payment and preparing check requests. Prepares complex, routine and non-routine reports receives, sorts, and summarizes material for the preparation of reports and prepares work reports for correspondence with applicants, owners and contractors. Formats and creates letters, memos, forms, labels, agendas, notices, reports, or other correspondence and proofs correspondence and related documents of staff.

Provides customer assistance to members of the public and building professionals regarding all aspects of permitting requirements and procedures. Coordinates and schedules appointments, meetings or reservations at the request of staff, prepares the location, photocopies materials and prepares agendas. Attends meetings, as requested, prepares agendas and minutes.

Prepares and maintains digital and hard copy files, as required, coordinates inspection scheduling and routes supplemental submittals. Updates and maintains the CPU for Citizenserve software and maintains updates and improvements for Citizenserve.

Other duties may include assisting fire, executive, planning and zoning, engineering and the capital projects department.Education and Experience:
Associates degree in related field,
10 or more years’ experience as a permit technician and/or;
Ten years of work experience in a customer-oriented position; or knowledge of interpreting building codes; or experience in reviewing construction plans or;
Any combination of education, training and experience which provides the required knowledge, skills, and abilities to perform
the essential functions of the job.

Licenses and Certifications:
Required-Must pass ICC Permit Technician Certification test within 12 months of hire date.
FEMA/NIMS 100, 300, 400, 700, 800

Desired-State of Alabama Notary Public
**Additional education, training, and experience beyond minimum requirements may be considered equivalent to select certifications.IMPORTANT JOB FUNCTIONS:
