Senior Machine Design Engineer

We are seeking a Senior Machine Design Engineer to join Amentum’s Advanced Solutions Group. Candidates may be based at any one of our offices in Tullahoma, TN; Farmington Hills, MI; or Greenville, SC.

Our Advanced Solutions Group delivers the design, construction, and operation of unique and complex research and development facilities across the nuclear, automotive, motorsports, defense, and aerospace industries. Our team has supported an impressive range of clients, including Audi, Boeing, BMW, Fiat Chrysler, Ford, Honda, General Motors, NASA, the U.S. Air Force, U.S. Navy, U.S. Department of Energy, Volkswagen, and organizations throughout North America, Europe, and Asia.

Most of your designs will be unique, and you will usually be working on several projects at one time in a dynamic, challenging, and even fun environment.  Many designs are “blank sheet of paper,” with few analogs or comparisons. This position will provide you with an exciting opportunity to lead and manage Machine Design projects as part of a multi-discipline team of professionals. We are looking for a Machine Design engineer who will work to ensure client satisfaction and deliver key Machine Design projects within scope, budget, and schedule. You should be a self-motivated professional with at least 15+ years of progressive Machine Design experience.

 

Essential Responsibilities:

Projects are often complex and multi-discipline, and Senior Engineers in E&P have ownership of the technical, schedule, and budget performance of the work assigned to them, and are expected to operate with general instructions in an independent mode. 

The Senior Engineer:

• Independently plans, schedules, conducts or coordinates detailed phases of engineering work through the selection and adaptation or modification of techniques, procedures, and criteria.
• Analyzes complex features of the work and applies machine design principles and practices, or devises new approaches in problem solutions.
• Thoroughly reviews all results from assigned tasks and determine if outputs are complete, correct, integrated with project objectives, and adequately documented.
• Develops and presents technical reports, 3D concepts, presentations, and calculations to project management and Clients.
• Coordinates and formally reviews the work of others for techniques and technical approach.
• Evaluates and defines interfaces with other disciplines, working closely with structural, mechanical process, controls and instrumentation, and aerodynamics/fluid dynamics engineers.
• Leads design team to produce complete design packages, including detailed drawings, calculations, and specifications, as required.

 

Required Qualifications:

• US citizenship is required to comply with government customer requirements and/or applicable government regulations.
• A Bachelor of Science in Mechanical or Aerospace from an ABET-accredited program.
• Minimum of 15 years of relevant and progressive experience in Machine Design (see “Adjacent Industries” below).
• Demonstrated experience leading other engineers and designer/drafters.

• Design for small-quantity fabrication & manufacturing (milling, turning, welding, laser-cutting, forming, etc.)
• Design for assembly & installation.
• Demonstrated knowledge and experience of common machine design elements: gears, bearings, belts, machine screws, chains, cams, linkages, gearmotors, servomotors, etc.
• Strong mechanical engineering analytical skills – kinematics, dynamics, stress/strain, power transmission, etc.
• FEA – static stress-strain, natural frequency.
• Demonstrated experience and expertise in employing GD&T/ASTM Y14.5 in detailed design drawings; understanding of tolerance, fits, and stack-up analysis.
• Scope/Schedule/Budget management.

Preferred Qualifications:

• 3D CAD experience, Inventor or Solidworks preferred.
• FEA – thermal, non-linear, forced mode dynamics and multi-physics analysis, Ansys preferred.
• Design experience with ASME B&PV Section VII, Div I & Div II.
• Fluid Power – employing pneumatic/hydraulic cylinders, valve stand design, P&IDs, etc.
• Basic experience with machine instrumentation (proximity sensors, vision sensors, strain gauges, scales, etc.)
• Installation Support and Supervision – guiding and answering suppliers, sub-contractors and other trades questions from the office and on-site.
• Design for fiber-composites manufacturing (fiberglass, carbon fiber).

 

Adjacent Industries:

• Aerospace & Defense Mechanical Design.
• Factory Automation (material handling, web handling, process automation, etc.)
• Fluid Power (Hydraulics/Pneumatics).

 

Description of Work Environment:

• Work will mainly be performed in an inside-office environment.
• Travel 1-10 days per quarter.

       

Compensation Details:

$140,000 - $180,000
