Trading Operations Technical Leader

Role Synopsis

The Trading Operations Technical Leader is a member of the Operations Extended Leadership Team and is responsible for ensuring the safe, compliant and effective delivery of trading operations activities across their assigned bench. The role provides operational leadership, technical expertise and mentoring to Trading Operators, while supporting the delivery of the trading strategy and ensuring adherence to risk, compliance and operational excellence standards.

The position works closely with Front Office, Shipping, Credit, Tax, Commodity Risk and other support functions, providing technical guidance, operational oversight and continuous improvement leadership to support commercial performance and operational excellence.

Key Accountabilities

• Build technical and operational capability within the trading operations team, including training, coaching and development of new and existing team members.
• Support day-to-day trading operations activities and provide technical expertise in complex operational scenarios.
• Provide out-of-hours operational support as required.
• Support cross-bench capability development and knowledge sharing across the wider Operations community.
• Act as the operational lead for new business activities and critical initiatives, ensuring operational readiness and risk assessment.
• Maintain strong relationships with Front Office and support functions including Tax, Credit, Commodity Risk and Shipping.
• Organise and facilitate technical meetings, ensuring key operational messages and findings are communicated effectively.
• Lead incident investigations, root cause analysis and operational risk management activities.
• Support delivery of trading strategy through technical expertise and operational insight.
• Drive continuous improvement initiatives and simplification projects across Operations.
• Ensure adherence to ST&S and RPTE operational risk management frameworks, policies and procedures.
• Lead the reporting and monitoring of operational indicators and performance metrics to support strategic and operational objectives.

Essential Experience & Requirements

• Strong experience in oil trading operations, including cargo and/or barge operations.
• Demonstrated operational expertise and a consistent track record of delivering commercial value.
• Strong understanding of risk management, compliance, HSSE and shipping requirements.
• Excellent leadership, stakeholder management and communication skills.
• Strong negotiation and influencing capabilities.
• Ability to achieve operational and business objectives through planning, prioritisation and resource management.
• High attention to detail and ability to solve complex operational problems.
• Validated ability to build relationships across Front Office teams and external counterparties.
• Confidence to challenge constructively and speak up when required.
