OC PUBLIC WORKS
OC Public Works (OCPW) provides services on a regional basis to unincorporated areas, to cities, and to other County agencies and departments. The primary mission of the department is to protect and enrich the community through the sustainable delivery of projects and services. OCPW is a unique County department comprised of ten (10) service areas: Administrative Services; Agricultural Commissioner/Sealer of Weights & Measures; OC Construction; OC Development Services; OC Environmental Resources; OC Facilities Design & Construction and CUF; OC Facilities Maintenance; OC Fleet Services; OC Infrastructure Programs; OC Operations & Maintenance.


THE OPPORTUNITY
OCPW - OC Operations & Maintenance (O&M) is looking for an Integrated Pest Management Technician I to inspect assigned areas for field collection, trapping, and laboratory support work leading to the detection and control of insects and other agricultural pests. These positions perform manual labor involving the removal of flammable vegetation and debris from properties declared a nuisance, as well as controlling and/or eradicating noxious weeds and vertebrate pests by mechanical or chemical means.  

Responsibilities and duties for this position include, but are not limited to, the following:

• Places, inspects, and maintains insect and/or vertebrate pesticides and traps, and monitors the progress of trapping/detection efforts
• Selects appropriate style of trap and implements delimitation trapping and pesticide spraying to eradicate infestations independently or in cooperation with the State
• Operates and maintains application equipment, power tools, safety equipment, and vehicles
• Performs manual vegetation management activities including cutting, grubbing, hand-pulling, and removing weeds from flood control channels, roadways, parcels, and slopes
• Maintains logs and records of pesticide inventories, vegetation/pest control operations, work completed, timekeeping records, and equipment usage

DESIRABLE QUALIFICATIONS AND CORE COMPETENCIES 
In addition to the minimum qualifications, the ideal candidate will possess six (6) months or more of experience performing plant disease or weed detection/identification, pest control, and grounds keeping. 

While not required, the ideal candidate will also possess a Qualified Applicators License/Qualified Applicators Certificate (QAL/QAC) issued by the California Department of Pesticide Regulation with Category C: Right-of-Way and/ or Category F: Aquatic, as well as experience working within flood control facilities and other rights-of-way.

In addition, the ideal candidate will also have extensive experience in the following core competencies:

Technical Knowledge/Skills

• Ability to read, understand, and follow complex oral and written instructions, including Safety Data Sheets (SDS), pesticide labels, and recommendations
• Ability to recognize and identify noxious and undesirable vegetation that occurs in Orange County and appropriate control methods
• Knowledge of methods & procedures used in applying rodenticides and setting traps
• Knowledge of basic math for simple computations, ability to mix the correct herbicide, and the determination of proper conditions for application of the herbicides
• Perform manual labor duties including lifting, walking, traversing slopes & uneven surfaces, vegetation management including application and vegetation removal
• Ability to schedule work activities to comply with set deadlines, permit conditions, and other site constraints

• Follow safe work policies and procedures
• Read, understand, and comply with written and verbal instructions, labels, laws, and technical regulations pertaining to vegetation, rodent, and pest control
• Safety precautions required to protect personnel and property from damage or destruction through the use of pesticides and related chemicals
• Safe work practices relating to the use of hand and power tools, pesticide applicators, compressors, pumps, and related equipment

Oral & Written Communication

• Effectively communicating with supervisors, co-workers, and the public
• Working cooperatively with others
• Maintaining accurate written documentation

LICENSE REQUIREMENT 
Possession of a valid California Class C Driver License is required.

RECRUITMENT PROCESS

The Structured Oral Interview is a timed assessment. Applicants will provide answers to job-related questions, which will be rated by a panel of subject matter experts using standardized evaluation criteria. Only the most qualified candidates will advance to the next step in the recruitment process or will be placed on the eligible list.

Eligible List
Once the assessment has been completed, HRS will establish an eligible list of candidates. Candidates placed on the eligible list may be referred to a selection interview to be considered for present and future vacancies.

Based on the County's needs, the selection procedures listed above may be modified. All candidates will be notified of any changes in the selection procedures.
