About the organization: Compass Family Services is a 100+ year old nonprofit working on the front lines of San Francisco’s homeless crisis. We provide families experiencing or at risk of homelessness with comprehensive support to address immediate needs and ensure long-term success.
About the team: The Intake Specialist is part of the Compass Family Resource Center team. The Resource Center supports homeless and at-risk families through access to basic goods (diapers, food, clothing), service referrals, case management, job search support, drop-in childcare, and family-centered support groups and classes.
Compensation: $27 - $31 hourly
Schedule: Monday - Friday, 9 am - 5 pm

Responsibilities:
The Intake Specialist will spend most of their time conducting initial intake interviews with families who come to Compass’ office in need of support. During the intake, they determine which programs families are eligible for and provide families with information and referrals. They also work closely with the rest of the Family Resource Center team to ensure that the Center is running smoothly.
Specific responsibilities include:
- Welcome families as they arrive at Compass Family Services. Conduct initial assessment to understand their needs, provide information about available services, and guide them through their options within Compass Family Services and in the community.
- Screen families for eligibility across various programs, complete Navigation Forms during drop-in intakes, and provide direct referrals to connect families to resources.
- Collaborate with Office Manager/Receptionist to maintain smooth family flow within the building, ensuring they are directed to the appropriate program.
- Train and mentor interns and volunteers on intake and drop-in best practices and protocols for family service delivery.
- Work closely with colleagues to assess emerging family needs, identify trends and maintain updated resources and information.
- Ensure accurate, up-to-date records gathered through Navigation Forms, other documents as applicable in Compass' Salesforce database, adhering to best practices in data management.
- Organize and manage client records/information to support consistency and quality assurance across the team.
- Support Distribution Center operations including inventory management, restocking, volunteer support, and distribution of basic needs items such as food, diapers, baby wipes, and hygiene products.
Qualifications:
- Understanding of trauma-informed care and issues facing homeless families.
- Knowledge of San Francisco social service resources.
- Experience working in crisis situations; ability to assess and de-escalate situations quickly
- Strong computer skills with proficiency in Microsoft programs (Outlook, Word, Excel, etc.). Salesforce experience is a plus.
- Outstanding work habits: strong communication skills, reliable, team-oriented, organized
- Demonstrated commitment to diversity, equity, inclusion and belonging work.
- Able to lift at least 25 pounds (essential for working with a team to handle diaper/food/clothing deliveries).
Compensation, Benefits and Location:
- Salary range: $27 - $31 per hour, 7.5 hours per day / 37.5 hours per week. Non-exempt.
- Paid time off: 4 weeks of vacation your first year, 5 in your second. Also paid holidays, sick time, family leave.
- Insurance: health, dental and vision insurance are fully covered by Compass for employees and dependent children. We also provide long term disability and life insurance.
- Retirement: after one year of work, Compass contributes an amount equal to 5% of your salary into a retirement account; this vests during years 2-6.
- Location: 37 Grove St, San Francisco. Fully on site, no remote days.
- Membership in OPEIU/Local 29 union.
