Description

[What the role is]

The Radiochemistry and Radiation Services Department (RRSD) is part of the Radiation Protection and Nuclear Science Group of the NEA, Singapore's national authority for radiation protection. RRSD conducts routine environmental radioactivity monitoring to safeguard public health and the environment. It is an IAEA Collaborating Centre - supporting international capacity-building and advancing scientific excellence in radiochemistry across the region and beyond.

[What you will be working on]

As a Deputy Principal Scientific Officer at RRSD, you will support the Head of Laboratory in managing RRSD’s operations and spearhead Singapore's contributions as an IAEA Collaborating Centre. Your key responsibilities will include:

  • Supporting the development and implementation of policies, procedures, and quality assurance programmes to maintain high standards of laboratory operations, including conducting regular audits and calibrations of equipment and preparing documentation for compliance with international and Workplace Safety and Health (WSH) standards and regulations
  • Maintaining ISO 17025 accreditation and good performance records in international proficiency tests, while working towards attaining ISO 17043 certification to establish the laboratory as a Proficiency Test provider for radiochemistry laboratories in the region
  • Taking charge of research initiatives in radiochemistry, including the development of new techniques, methodologies, and applications for environmental radioactivity monitoring, and staying abreast of the latest developments in the field
  • Collaborating with international and local research institutions to advance scientific knowledge in radiochemistry
  • Publishing findings in peer-reviewed journals and presenting at conferences to contribute to the global scientific community
  • Supporting the laboratory’s engagement with the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) to ensure alignment with its objectives and standards, and participating in IAEA programmes, projects, and training initiatives as a Collaborating Centre
  • Providing technical expertise, training, and capacity-building support to IAEA member states in fulfilment of the Collaborating Centre mandate, including the provision of proficiency tests to build and sustain technical competency across radiochemistry laboratories in the region

[What we are looking for]

The job might be for you if you possess:

  • A Degree in Chemistry, Radiochemistry, Nuclear Science, or a related discipline
  • Relevant experience in radiochemistry, environmental radioactivity monitoring, or nuclear science, with the ability to work independently and take ownership of scientific projects
  • Experience leading or supervising a team in a laboratory or research environment
  • Experience working in or contributing to multi-disciplinary teams, with the ability to manage competing priorities in a laboratory or research environment
  • Strong analytical and operational thinking, with the ability to contribute meaningfully to laboratory improvements and navigate complex scientific or policy environments
  • Strong stakeholder engagement and communication skills, including experience working with local and/or overseas research institutions, and inter-agency partners
  • Excellent analytical, writing, and presentation skills, with the ability to translate technical findings into clear recommendations for diverse audiences
  • Resilience and sound prioritisation skills, with the ability to deliver quality outcomes under tight timelines and shifting demands
  • A track record of contributing to peer-reviewed publications or scientific conferences will be advantageous
  • Familiarity with ISO 17025 laboratory management standards and quality assurance practices, and knowledge of ISO 17043 proficiency testing requirements will be an added advantage

As part of the shortlisting process for this role, you may be required to complete a medical declaration and/or undergo further assessment.

Applicants will be updated on the status of their applications within 4 weeks of the closing date of this job posting.
