Power the community. Build a career that makes an impact. The City of Buffalo is seeking a skilled Electric Journey Lineworker to help keep our community powered, connected, and safe. This essential position installs, maintains, and repairs the City’s overhead and underground electrical transmission and distribution systems, responds to outages and emergencies, and helps ensure reliable electric service for our residents and businesses. In addition to performing highly skilled electrical work, our Journey Lineworkers play an important role in supporting and mentoring apprentices, promoting a strong safety culture, and ensuring work meets applicable electrical codes and safety standards. *Additional compensation opportunities include up to 5% specialty pay, on-call pay, and overtime in accordance with City policy and applicable agreements. |
Essential Responsibilities
- Electrical System Construction and Maintenance
- Install, operate, and maintain high-voltage overhead and underground electric systems.
- Set and frame poles, string conductors, and install or replace transformers, capacitors, and related equipment.
- Service Connections and Troubleshooting
- Perform new service installations, disconnections, upgrades, and repairs.
- Troubleshoot and resolve issues such as voltage fluctuations and equipment failures.
- Storm and Emergency Response
- Respond to outages and electrical emergencies as part of a rotational on-call schedule.
- Locate faults, operate high-voltage switches, and restore service under adverse weather conditions.
- Equipment Operation and Maintenance
- Operate specialized equipment such as digger derricks, bucket trucks, trenchers, and loaders.
- Perform inspections and routine maintenance on vehicles, tools, and safety equipment.
- Mentorship and Apprenticeship Support
- Provide hands-on training and performance feedback to Electric Lineman Apprentices.
- Support progression through each level of the City's structured apprenticeship program.
- Vegetation and Safety Clearance
- Conduct tree trimming near high-voltage lines following applicable safety guidelines.
- Identify hazards and implement safe work practices to prevent accidents.
- Underground Utility Location and Trenching
- Perform utility locates and trenching activities as required for underground infrastructure.
Secondary Responsibilities
- Assist with fiber construction support or other utility-related duties as assigned.
- Complete necessary documentation related to work performed, equipment used, and inspections conducted.
Mentorship & Apprenticeship Program Support
The Electric Journey Lineworker actively supports the progression and development of Electric Lineman Apprentices by participating in the structured apprenticeship program. The Journey Lineworker provides training and oversight as apprentices progress through each competency level, from foundational learning through practical, on-the-job experience.
Other Essential Job Responsibilities
A. Perform additional duties and take on other responsibilities as apparent or assigned, supporting the Utility Department’s overall operations.
B. Participate in on-call duties as part of a rotational schedule, responding to utility emergencies and supporting other city departments, including fiber construction when necessary.
Minimum Qualifications / Experience Requirements
- Valid Minnesota Journey Lineworker Certification.
- Post-secondary vocational or technical training in electrical line work (preferred).
- Valid Class A Commercial Driver’s License with Tanker Endorsement or ability to obtain within six months.
- Minimum of three (3) years of high voltage linework experience (up to 15kV).
- Completion of OSHA 30-Hour Training or other applicable advanced safety certifications.
Preferred Qualifications
- Previous Lineworker experience in a governmental or municipal setting.
Work Environment
This position involves year-round outdoor work in varied weather conditions including extreme cold, wind, and heat. Work regularly involves exposure to high-voltage equipment, heights, confined spaces, and physically demanding activities. Safety is paramount and adherence to all protocols is required.
Physical Requirements
- Ability to climb poles and work at heights using aerial equipment.
- Lift and carry equipment and materials weighing up to 50 pounds.
- Manual dexterity for operating tools and equipment.
- Hearing and visual acuity for diagnosing issues and operating equipment safely.
